Beat the Winter Blues in Downtown Highland Park
This February, Downtown Highland Park is hosting an array of unique events that are sure to brighten up even the darkest winter days. My Best Friend’s Closet (1780 Green Bay Road) kicks off the month’s festivities by celebrating its three year anniversary on Friday, February 1. Partnering with Mia Francesca, Van Gogh Vodka, Salon Vole, Equinox and FreshSkin, the anniversary party will feature food, drinks, raffle prizes and special discounts. Guests will have the opportunity to meet “Project Runway’s” Joshua McKinley and Peach Carr as well as jewelry designer Stacy Bankier.
The premier of “The Baker’s Wife” will also take place on Friday, February 1 at The Music Theater Company (1850 Green Bay Road). From the creator of “Wicked” and “PIPPIN,” “The Baker's Wife” is a romantic musical featuring songs such as “Meadowlark” and “Proud Lady.” Catch dinner beforehand at any of Downtown Highland Park’s delicious restaurants and you are sure to have a wonderful warm winter evening. On Monday, February 11, Heidi Kettenring will perform a solo concert at The Music Theater Company. On Saturday, February 23 girl next door and singer/songwriter Jess Godwin joins The Music Theater Company with pop singer/songwriter Janelle Kroll recently of CW's “The Next.”
Healing Power Yoga (459 Central Avenue) is offering a two part introductory workshop on the Chakras and Subtle Body on Saturday, February 2, and Saturday, March 2, from 8:00 to 11:00 am. Yummy Bowl (1908 Sheridan Road) is celebrating the Chinese New Year on Friday and Saturday, February 8th - 9th, with its 8th Annual Dinner Concert which is a sold-out event. Theresa Chang (former leading soprano of Shanghai Lyric Opera and Yummy Bowl’s owner), and Guang Long Li (Er Hu musician and Yummy Bowl’s manager) will perform along with other performers and musicians of all ages. On February 22, the Ballet Makkai Foundation will be hosting its fundraiser, Raising the Barre. Held at The Art Center – Highland Park, the fundraiser will raise money in order to fund scholarships for students within the school in need of financial help to further their dance education both at the school and summer intensive programs around the country.
Every Saturday in February Norton’s Restaurant (1905 Sheridan Road) will be hosting live music. On February 2, New Younger Brothers will play classic rock n roll from the 60’s to the 80’s. On February 9, Chicago’s best Rolling Stones cover band, Tumbling Dice, will be playing rock n roll hits. Evil Wayz, who play classic, heavy duty rock n roll music with a bit more beat, will be at Norton’s on February 16. Class of ’86 will be playing classic rock favorites of the British Invasion and American ‘60s groups on February 23.
This month Vibe at 1935 (1935 Sheridan Road) has allthe entertainment you need to cure your winter blues. Every Friday and Saturday night Vibe at 1935 has musicians booked such as Matt Feddermann and Danny Shaffer and Joe Shadid and Evan Hand of Waterstreet Band. Every Tuesday is Blues Jam where anyone can sign up and sit in for a few songs. Vibe Laughs will continue on February 6 and February 20 with comedians from Chicagoloand.

The Downtown Highland Park Alliance is a public-private partnership of the Highland Park CBD Property Owners Association, the City of Highland Park and the Highland Park Chamber of Commerce. The Alliance was founded in 2008 to enhance the economic vitality of Downtown Highland Park. The operations and promotions of the Alliance are funded by a Special Service Area commercial property tax currently authorized through 2013.
