Welcome back, Patch Blogger!

Apple Picking Season Is Here!

We don't have an orchard in Deerfield, so Patch readers share their favorite U-Picks nearby.

Sweater weather is here — the cool autumn wind has been blowing through the North Shore and pumpkin pie is popping up at grocery stores again. It wouldn't be fall without an applie picking trip to a nearby orchard, and Patch readers have suggested some of their favorites on Facebook

  • Anne Fiascone and Susan Applebaum both recommended Heinz Orchard in Green Oaks. The orchard is open Friday to Sunday from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
They currently have Jonathan, Empire and Golden Delicious apples ready for picking, and expect Red Delicious apples to ripen by Sept. 14.
There's no entrance or parking fee, and guests can choose from $8 1/2 peck bags (approx. 6 lbs of apples) or $15 one peck bags (approx. 12 lbs of apples) for their picking. The orchard only accepts cash.
  • Adam Stone recommends the Apple Holler orchard in Sturtevant, WI. En route to Milwaukee, this orchard is right off I-94 and open 7 days a week.
Apple Holler also offers a dinner theater, plenty of kids' activities, a farmers market and gemstone mining. You could spend the whole day here.
  • Marie Turley Cullotta and the folks at Edwardo's Natural Pizza in Skokiesuggested Edwards Apple Orchard in Poplar Grove — a destination so rustic they place doesn't even have their own website.
Online reviews praise Edwards' fried apple donuts and the appple pie with cheese.
Visitors can also expect pony rides, a petting zoo, a giant maze and a country shop one Yelp user described as a "Cracker Barrel on steroids."

When visiting an orchard, always call ahead to guarantee apples are ready for picking. Share more orchard suggestions in the comments.
