Badminton Team Wears CSL Crown

Deerfield High Athletes win 10 of 18 individual titles as no Warrior places lower than third. Baseball team edges New Trier.

Winning 10 of 18 individual titles, the Deerfield High School badminton team won the Central Suburban League championship Friday and Saturday in Deerfield finishing ahead of eight other teams. No Warrior athlete finished lower than third in her flight.

The Final Score:        1. Deerfield 81, 2. New Trier 67.5, 3. Glenbrook South 48.5, 4. Maine West 47, 5. Maine South 43.5, 6. Evanston 42.5, 7. Maine East 42.5, 8. Glenbrook North 22, 9. Waukegan 14. 

Warriors Star Performers:   Katie Frankel (No. 2 singles), Gerri Soren (No. 4 singles), Lauren Spungen (No. 10 singles) and Maddie Wilson (No. 12 singles) won singles and doubles titles. Soren and Wilson teamed up at No. 6 doubles while Spungen paired with Laura Holzman at No. 5 doubles and Franked took No. 1 doubles with Ally Kolpas.

Other Notable Warrior Performances:       Other singles champions were Marissa Levy (No. 5) and Erin Church (No. 11). The duo of Dana Levy and Zoe Sinton took No. 2 doubles. Runner up medals went to Cara Silverman (No. 1 singles and No. 3 doubles with Marissa Levy), Sinton (No. 7 singles), Holzman (No. 9 singles) and the tandem of Church and Nicki Flynn (No. 4 doubles). Dana Levy (No. 6 singles) and Flynn (No. 8 singles) added third place medals. 

Who’s Next:   The Warriors compete in the Sectional Thursday. 

The Bottom Line:      Deerfield won the league championship on the strength of its tournament victory and earning 122 points in dual meets through the season edging New Trier, which scored 119, for that honor. 

Baseball 

The Final Score:        Deerfield 2, New Trier 1 (8 innings) 

Warriors Star Performer:    Xander Horwitz collected two hits in four trips to the plate including a home run and RBI.

Other Notable Warrior Performances:       Ben Browdy was 1 – for – 3 including a home run while David Silverberg fanned six Trevians for his second win of the season.

Who’s Next:   The Warriors entertain Evanston at 4:45 p.m. today. 

The Bottom Line:      Horwitz homered in the bottom of the eighth to give Deerfield the win as all Warrior scoring came by the long ball.
