Bess, Bloom, Stitcher Head Downstate

Warrior wrestlers win Sectional titles, Stitcher qualifies for State Gymnastics Meet, Swimmers take third in league meet and boys' basketball team stomps Sullivan.

Wrestling 

Feb. 11 

Warriors Star Performers:   (220) and (145) won Sectional championships.

Who’s Next:   Bess and Bloom compete at the State Meet Friday and Saturday in Champaign. 

The Bottom Line:      Bess, the third ranked wrestler in the state in his class, ran his record for the season to 36-1. Bloom, 38-1, is ranked eighth.

Gymnastics 

Feb. 9 

Warriors Star Performer:    scored 36.825 in all around and 9.275 in both floor exercise and uneven parallel bars at the Niles North Sectional. 

Who’s Next:   Stitcher competes in the State Meet Friday and Saturday in Palatine. 

The Bottom Line:      Stitcher heads to the State Finals for the second year in a row hoping to climb higher in the standings. 

Swimming 

Feb. 11 

The Final Score:  1. Niles North 352, , 3. Highland Park 223, 4. Glenbrook North 201, 5. Maine West 116, 6. Maine East 97. 

Warriors Star Performer:    set Central Suburban League North Division and Deerfield pool records on the way to winning the conference championship in the 200-yard individual medley (1:57.67) and the 100 backstroke (53.31). He joined Chris Roberts, Joey Barr and Alex Howard to finish second in the 400 freestyle relay (3:21.66). Ewing and Roberts formed the third-place quartet in the 200-medley relay (1:41.72) along with Dan Perlovsky and Mark Stern. 

Other Notable Warrior Performances:       Roberts won the 50 freestyle (22.18) and was fourth in the 100 freestyle (49.71). Sean Scarry took the diving title (398) with Ryan Church third (390.6) and Jon Bomberg fifth (301.25). Barr was third in the 500 freestyle (5:05.11) with Matt Davis sixth (5:05.73). Stern grabbed fifth in the 100 butterfly (56.11) and Evan Horwitz ended sixth in the 100 breaststroke (1:07.10). 

Who’s Next:   The Warriors compete in the Glenbrook North Sectional at 1 p.m. Saturday in Northbrook. 

The Bottom Line:      Solid relay performances, Ewing’s record setting performances and Roberts’ win in the 50 freestyle made the difference for the Warriors second place finish. 

Boys’ Basketball 

Feb. 11 

The Final Score:        Deerfield 75, Sullivan 31 

Warriors Star Performers: scored 14 points and shagged seven rebounds in 13 minutes of play while Tony Shapiro added 14 scores as well.

Other Notable Warrior Performances:       Greg Dikopf chipped in 12 tallies and took down three rebounds while contributed 10 points, three boards, four assists and a pair of steals.

Who’s Next:   The Warriors travel to Niles North at 7:30 p.m. Friday. 

The Bottom Line:      The Warriors lead 20-10 at the end of the first period and never looked back holding Sullivan to single digits in the final three quarters. No Warrior starter played more than 14 minutes as 12 different players had a scoring role with four in double figures.
