Contested Races Coming for Village, 109 Boards

Competitive contests are shaping up for the Village Board of Trustees and the Deerfield Public Schools District 109 Board of Education in the April 9 municipal elections with five people each running for three Village Board slots and four School Board openings.

In two other contests, Mayor Harriet Rosenthal is unopposed running for her second term while there are three contestants seeking the two available full terms on the Deerfield Library Board.

Earlier: Voters Overturn Caucus Endorsement

Rosenthal will run as part of the Deerfield Caucus Party along with incumbent Trustees Alan Farkas, Mary Oppenheim and Barbara Struthers. Running as independents are Plan Commissioner Ron Nadler and former Trustee Jerry Kayne.

The Village Caucus originally endorsed Farkas, Struthers and Nadler. At the biennial town meeting Dec. 4, a majority of registered voters present gave backing to Oppenheim rather than Nadler.

Katie Bittner, Scott Kluge, Joel Kogan, Sari Montgomery and Ron Worth are running for the four open seats on the District 109 Board. Worth is the only incumbent seeking reelection. He has the backing of the District 109 Caucus along with Bittner, Kluge and Montgomery.

Two incumbents—Mary Courtney and Michael Goldberg—are seeking reelection as Deerfield Public Library trustees along with newcomer Baram Avraham. They are running for the two full terms spots.

There is also a vacancy on the Library Board for a partial term. No one filed to run for that positiion.
