The Final Score: Glenbrook North 42, Deerfield 14
Warriors’ Star Performers: Benjamin Ethridge got his first varsity action at quarterback for Deerfield leading the team’s initial scoring drive including carrying four times for 10 yards. Alec Frank gained 51 of his squad’s 80 yards on eight carries on the Warriors second scoring march.
Other Notable Warrior Performances: Landen Hinds scored Deerfield’s first touchdown carrying the ball 21 yards on three carries during the team’s 39-yard drive. Timothy Shanley logged the Warriors second touchdown with a 12-yard run. Samuel Modro intercepted a Spartan pass in the first quarter to thwart a Glenbrook North opportunity and put his team in a position to even the score.
Who’s Next: The Warriors entertain Maine West at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 28 at Adams Field.
The Bottom Line: Deerfield’s defense did not tackle as well as it usually does, according to Coach Steve Winiecki. That lapse gave Spartan running back Grant Rushing the opportunity to rivet the Warrior defenders for 235 yards on the ground and 57 more on a pass reception while scoring four touchdowns. “That’s what happens when you don’t tackle well with a good runner,” Winiecki said.
After holding Deerfield on the game’s first possession, Glenbrook North scored once in the first quarter and three more times in the second to take a 28-7 halftime lead. Though the Spartans’ pace slowed in the second half, the Warriors were unable to pick up the tempo enough to get back in the contest.
