Local Help Keeps Golf Tournament Going

The golfers at last weekend's Western Amateur Golf Tournament came from all over the world, but the people who worked the tournament came from much closer.

Many of the 156 golfers who played at last weekend's Western Amateur Golf Tournament came from all over the world. But the people who made sure the tournament ran smoothly? They didn't have to travel far.

Larry and Ann Brown, for example, pointed at the first hole at Exmoor Country Club, where the tournament was held. That's where they walked onto from their Highwood home to get to work.

"We're very longtime members of Exmoor," Ann said. "We grew up around here."

Both volunteers at the tournament, Ann and Larry also hosted one of the golfers who came from Taiwan to participate. They were one of 50 members of the club to host a golfer.

"We don't know which, but one of these golfers is going to be a major in golf," Larry said. "It's impressive to know you're looking at that."

Some of those 156 players also came from nearby, though none of them made Wednesday's cut.

Another local at the weekend tournament was Jesus Anaya, a Highwood resident who caddies at Exmoor when he's not working the front desk at Highland Park's Equinox. The 24-year-old has been caddying since he was in high school.

"I started from the bottom up, getting picked on from all the older caddies," he said. The bottom Anaya referred to meant only getting out twice a week and "playing a lot of poker."

In his years as a caddy, though, Anaya hadn't seen anything like the competition he saw Wednesday.

"Everybody's on their A-game," he said. "This is one of the best tours this course has had."

The 2012 Western Amateur Championship ended Sunday. The winner was Chris Williams, of Moscow, Idaho. He defeated final-match opponent Jordan Russell of College Station, Texas with 1 up.

I wonder if any folks of the Jewish faith were working the tournament or even allowed in to watch?

What a stupid comment Lee, every "faith" has their country clubs that don't allow "others" in.

Steve S:

That in itself is a very stupid comment. Are you saying that, if true, its ok to ban certain faiths?

Lee, no it is not a stupid comment, yours was though, and I am not saying it is ok nor do I belong to a country club. But I am Jewish and I do know there are many Jewish country clubs that do not allow gentiles in. They are private clubs so they can do what they please. How many gentiles are at Briarwood, Green Acres, Twin Orchards, or Bryn Mawr? I did not say it was right, I said your comment (and obviously others agree with me) is idiotic as is your follow up on faith banning.

You are unbelievably naive and since you don't belong to a CC then you have no clue who is or is not banned as yousay(your word). The four clubs you mention all have gentile members. They also accept members other than the caucasion race. I guarantee you that Exmoor does not and you might also check Old Elm and a few others in the neighborhood. If you dont have the facts than stay out of it and dont make yourself look stupid

Lee - You don't belong to a Country Club either (obviously not Exmoor) so you too have no clue who is or is not "banned". Their membership is none of your business. If you feel disenfranchised then go ahead and start your own club somewhere. You aren't a member at Exmoor and you have no idea what their membership makeup looks like. I guarantee you that Exmoor has plenty of of non-white and non-christian members. My guess is either you are a former employee who is upset because you lost your job or you are someone who wanted to join but were not extended an offer to join either way, get a life my friend and pick a better cause to troll about...
