Update: Schakowsky Blasts Health Care Vote

Congresswoman likes the law as it is while Dold thinks change is necessary.

(Update, 6:40 p.m.) Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-Evanston) criticized what she called the 33rd effort of the House Republican majority to repeal all or part of the Affordable Care Act after today’s vote to eliminate the law. She thinks the time should be devoted to job creation.

“Though Republicans took control of the House with the promise that they will focus on jobs, they have wasted more than 43 hours of floor time on legislation to repeal Obamacare,” Schakowsky said.

Schakowsky likes the health care law as it is. She praises how it has already helped millions of Americans by eliminating caps on their insurance, allowing children under 16 to remain on their parents’ policies and insuring care for youngsters with pre-existing conditions.

“I look forward to making sure that all Americans learn about the tremendous benefits Obamacare offers them,” Schakowsky said. “Obamacare is one of greatest achievements of our time and one of the proudest moments during my time in Congress.”

(Earlier, 5:40 p.m.) Less than two weeks after the United States Supreme Court declared President Barack Obama’s Affordable Care Act constitutional, the House of Representatives voted to repeal it, 244-185, with Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-Evanston) against and Rep. Robert Dold in favor.

Shortly after the Supreme Court decision, House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-VA) said he would schedule a vote this week. Dold indicated the next day he would vote to repeal. Schakowsky called the action useless a few days later.

“The Republicans have had dozens of votes already on parts or all of Obamacare,” Schakowsky told Patch a shortly after the Supreme Court decision. “Like the others, this latest effort will go nowhere and is a waste of time.”

Though he favors some form of health care reform, Dold voted against the measure because of its effect on the economy, increased health care costs and quality of care.

“The Affordable Care Act merely addresses one piece of the puzzle, but in doing so it further hurts our economic recovery by dramatically raising taxes on hardworking families and small businesses by hundreds of billions of dollars,” Dold said.

Dold also worries the law in its present form is more expensive than originally forecast and could cost the taxpayers $1.7 trillion, according to the Congressional Budget Office.

Despite voting to take the Affordable Care Act off the books, Dold wants to implement certain provisions into a new law. He hopes to work in a bipartisan manner to accomplish the changes.

“There are certainly good aspects of this law which should remain in place going forward, but there’s a way to go about health care reform without bankrupting our nation, our families, and our small businesses,” Dold said.

"Barring such corrective legislative action (or a bigger tax increase if President Obama is re-elected), however, a $525 billion tax increase would indeed be the largest in American history, at least in nominal dollars. All of which makes President Obama’s latest campaign-season pose as a tax cutter seem even phonier than usual." http://www.nysun.com/national/obamacare-does-indeed-look-like-the-largest/87895/

Since the tax goes miles beyond the so-called "penalty" and includes NEW taxes as well as other tax increases (e.g. 3.8% capital gains and dividend income), it sucks to be MOST OF US. Gee, fewer doctors, higher costs and a further crippled economy. Plus we get to have Washington setting medical policy for all of us (instead of our physicians). Sounds like a win-win to me !

The dividend issue is impacting many with insurance coverage but few without insurance. The Democrats want to refine the Act. The Republicans want to trash a generational achievement with nothing to replace it. A low regular income earner with high dividend income gets subsidized medicare. A low income earner with little dividend income probably has no insurance, has to pay retail healthcare rates and becomes a 'free rider' affecting us all. Is the Act perfect? No. The Civil Rights Act is actually a series of Acts. My case for keeping what took generations to achieve and refine it, not trash the whole thing through political stunts.

Did Jane (oops, I mean Jan) really say it allowed kids under 16 to remain on their parents' policies? If she did, she must be one of the 435 who didn't read the 2000+ -page bill!!!

That was clearly an author's error. The media continues to fail to proof-read their writing and continues to misinform the masses. Surprise.

This woman has got to go, and her convicted felon of a husband. Its not that anyone, does not want everyone to have access to doctors, hospitals, and health care. We just want to be able to pay for it. Not put it off for the next generation to worry about. BTW if it is so good, why does not the wonderful Congresswoman who cares so deeply about health care drop her Congressional health care and become part of Obamacare?

You're right. After the concealed carry discussions and my stance against it, I noticed such hatred from many of the right wing gun packing that I decided to keep posting using my real initials and that's not new. I've been on these boards for quite awhile, generally defending the innocent, supporting the President and doing my best to expose the lies coming from the Right (death panels, lower gun crime rates in states with concealed carry- Illinois is actually lower, woman's right to choose, anyone's right to get married- especially with a 50% divorce rate amongst the 'traditional' and Las Vegas 1 hour traditional weddings, Rush is a prophet, secession, taxing the Catholic Church) and on and on. So, on these boards when you have people advertising they carry guns when they are illegal to carry in Illinois, I choose to post using my initials for my own safety (instead of illegally carrying a gun). Anyway, was that just a dig at my use if initials or do you post under multiple names and 'RB' was already taken?

Richard Becker AIA: other than identifying yourself as not being RB, you had no meaningful response to this post about the Dividend/High EarnerTax (first $250k is at regular rate), post. Here's the post again just in case you did not read past 'RB' and freaked out that some of your Fake Small Government Republicans would think it was You posting such a thing....The dividend issue is impacting many with insurance coverage but few without insurance. Rb I have a feeling you believe in the Easter bunny and the tooth fairy. I am sure that most people in America feel that the government needs to take care of the helpless, but not the clueless. I learned a long time ago that life is not fair. Yes there are poor people, sick people and even some wealthy people. You continue to bring up generational achievements, tell me from 1960's to today, things any better for the world ,the poor. Open your eyes and look around, the south and west side of Chicago has never been worse off. There are 320 million Americans today its about time we stood up and told the politicians that their jobs are not for life and should only be for a term or two. They are there to serve not the other way around. I am sure if they had to get a job and wake up everyday to go to work like the majority, without the benefits of government, they would have a different outlook.

Spoken like a product of the Chicago Public School system. Sims, are you still upset about the recall election in Wisconsin? (The people of Wisconsins voted to retain Governor Scott Walker. That gets her really upset.) Get over it, the November election will be a Republican landslide and Obamacare will be history.

Wouldn't that be nice ! And government can get back to trying to help the poor and disadvantaged instead of exploiting them as political pawns. When judging our reigning President's accomplishments, remember the adage (spoken by John Mitchell, a Republican, but true nonetheless), "Watch what we do, not what we say."

Governor Bobby Jindal on Obamacare:

"The President promised us our premiums would go down $2,500 per family per year if we passed his reform; family premiums increased 9 percent last year. President Obama promised us we could keep our plans and our doctors; as many as 20 million Americans will lose their employer-provided health plans. President Obama promised us he would "protect Medicare;" Medicare's Chief Actuary says the Obamacare cuts to providers are "unrealistic" and not sustainable, and millions of seniors will lose access to Medicare Advantage plans and benefits. The President promised us he wouldn't raise taxes on middle class families making less than $250,000 a year; Obamacare raises taxes on health plans, medical devices, prescription drugs, and employers, and 75% of the individual mandate tax will fall on the middle class. Over 20 million individuals will remain uninsured, and health care spending will be higher than it would have been if the law had not passed. President Obama campaigned against Hillary Clinton's individual mandate and John McCain's tax increase on generous health care insurance, and included both in Obamacare."
