Deerfield residents still wondering about the buzz surrounding community choice aggregation still have some ways of getting the low-down on this March 20 ballot initiative.

In addition to casting their votes before or on primary Election Day for federal, state and county offices, Deerfield residents will be asked if they want the village to act on behalf of its people by bundling lots of electric accounts and seeking bids for electricity on the open market rather than continuing to buy power from Commonwealth Edison.

The village will be one of a number of communities that will be voting on this measure this month.

Hear about it

Deerfield will offer a one-hour informational program at 9 a.m. March 7 at village hall, 850 Waukegan Rd. Sponsored by the DBR Chamber of Commerce, the event is free and open to the public.

Community aggregation will be featured in the March edition of the village's newsletter, D-Tales, coming soon to your mailbox. Information also will be placed in water bills.

But still, catch the Feb. 21 public hearing, the first of two mandatory sessions that the board had to conduct on the initiative. No new information was provided during the second hearing on March 5.

If voters say yes, the board will approve a contract for an alternative supplier April 2. Trustees will determine what percentage of less polluting energy and the associated rate that will be provided to the community. Once a price is locked in, Deerfield will move forward with Commonwealth Edison to switch people over to the new supplier, village officials said.
