Poll: What Should Replace Office Depot?

With Deerfield considering zoning changes to ease the way for businesses to open in the Lake Cook Road Corridor, Patch wants to know what readers would like to see open in the former Office Depot site.

Readers have been active with their comments throughout Patch’s coverage of attempts to renovate the Deerbrook Mall but little attention has been given to the former Office Depot across the way on the east side of Waukegan Road.

The southeast corner of Lake Cook and Waukegan Roads will soon be a medical office building as well as the location of the former George’s What’s Cooking but what is in store for the building which once housed Office Depot?

Earlier: Village Moves to Strengthen Deerbrook Area

Mayor Harriet Rosenthal has been pushing for retail use of vacant space in the Lake Cook Road corridor to generate sales tax for the Village. The Village Board of Trustees took steps at its Monday meeting to ease the way for retailers to establish themselves in the area.

Patch wants to know what its readers would like to see in the location. Please take a few minutes to complete the poll at the bottom of this article and let us know your opinion. The space is large offering a lot of possibilities.

The results will be published Friday. Feel free to expand on your opinion in the comment section.

The mall needs two strong anchors like Mariano's and Von Maur or Bloomingdales or Nordstrom. Add a mix of cute boutiques, children's stores, casual restaurants and a tot's play area and you'll have a thriving area. When the library moves back, ask Dominick's to reconsider a store in that area.

Come on and be realistic here, why would von maur, bloomingdales , or Nordstrom want to be in that dump when northbrook court is down the street. Maybe we should ask Nordstrom to open next to the thrift store mentioned above.

None of the stores listed in the survey have a chance of making it in this location. This is a tough location and the only thing that can make it work is a destination that people want to go to. I agree something family oriented would be the best bet and Portillo's is one of the few resturants that would have a chance there, as people should go out of their way to go there.

We have plenty of childrens stores and do not need anymore. The big stores could not make it there. See Fields in Lake Forest and Sax in HP also you have Northbrook Mall next door! Boutiques are not suited to this space although it could be torn down and redeveloped into another little strip mall with the usual stores that go in and out of business:)

Again this was a no brainer and the only mystery is how Office Depot lasted as long as they did. If they were not a chain they would have disappeared long ago.

How about...................."GAMEWORKS". Just like the one in schaumburg. That place is awsome. We showed up one time with our kid after 9:00 pm on a weekend and they didn't let us in because it was over 21 after that time. Genious.

I like this idea too. Nothing like that in this area and could pull from surrounding suburbs. Might be better, though, in Deerbrook once that gets revamped.

Another great idea by Moe, thanks Moe. Why can't anyone in the city gov. think of this?

The amount of parking really limits what could go in the existing space. It most likely will have to be torn down for whatever would go there. I think fast food could do well there, but McDonald's wouldn't be happy about that.

Aldi. Seriously, it's about the right size and despite our demographics, people still like to save money. The nearest may be Niles, Palatine or Mundelein.

Hey Steve S, and Mesh, happy New year!
Call Moe a dreamer, but I always want to see a strip mall(and no, not a strip club mall) that had a new concept in what people could really use. A common area where you could have work stations, like kinkos. Arcade for kids in the day. Laundrymat, coffee shop, tavern, buffet as well as finer dining, open to outside vending on weekend( flea+antique), and other small fun businesses that can't afford high rent. Get the buzz going, and make deerbrook mall the hip place to be again(like the old"Venture" days)

Maybe they could build another building next to it? That way it won't be lonely

It doesn't matter what they put there - unless you're heading northbound, getting in to the lot is extremely difficult. Getting out after you're done shopping is just as bad (even if you're heading northbound).

Leave it as green space - or use it for storm water retention.

If they build an Aldi or a thrift store, your $400,000 Deerfield home is worth $300,000 overnight.

Honestly, that is a great strip club location.

How about a Goodwill Super Store like on Northbrook's west side. Or, a Dollar Store like in downtown Northbrook! Come on, lets get really creative. That 400k house would be worth 200k in that case.

Let's start with an incredibly simple idea. I get the feeling that's all the planning the village board can handle.

How about something that's not a direct competitor of a business directly across the street?

Moe's bad. I was confused and forgot their was a office depot there. I was thinking of officeMax. Silly me. Anywho, that's a horrible location for anything. Sorry folks, I thought we were going to revive deerbrook mall. Make it the new DMV (secretary of the state). Then we have to go there.

They should make something unique and different-build it and they will come. A place like in Rosemont where they have restaurants in a square and in the middle is an ice rink. Something along those lines- with parking!
