Poll: Which Political Commercial Stretches the Truth the Most?

More than $42 million has been spent on six Congressional races in Illinois and much of it right here in the 10th District between Brad Schneider and Robert Dold. Now it is your chance to vote on which commercial spins the tallest tale.

With four days to go until 10th Congressional District voters decide to reelect Rep. Robert Dold (R-Kenilworth) or replace him with Democrat Brad Schneider of Deerfield, the candidates are spending their time crisscrossing the area meeting voters.

While Schneider and Dold make their case on a personal level, voters will continue to be pelted with television commercials in part attacking the two men. There are six contested Congressional race across Illinois and $42 million has been spent so far, according to a story in the Chicago Tribune.

Earlier: Party Leaders Weigh in on 10th District Attack Ads

Much of that money has been spent on negative commercials. Dold and Schneider will claim those attacks are distortions of their words and records at best and lies at worst. Patch wants to know which commercial our readers think is the most untrue of all and is giving you a chance to vote.

Patch has assembled nine commercials attacking either Schneider or Dold and included them with this story. Beneath the article is an unscientific Patch poll allowing you to select the tallest tale of this election season.

Here is a brief summary of the advertisements with the title which will be in the poll to make voting easier:

  • Johnson Praises Medicare—Former President Lyndon Johnson talks about the benefits of Medicare while words on the screen accuse Dold and the Republican Party of trying to end the program. It is paid for by the Schneider campaign.
  • Schneider Is Bad for Business—The United States Chamber of Commerce criticizes Schneider for supporting policies that will cause uncertainty for business and higher taxes.
  • Dold Tied to Tea Party—The House Majority PAC paid for this commercial claiming Dold’s voting record is in line with the Tea Party Agenda.
  • Schneider Has Poor Record in Business—Brad Schneider is criticized for the lack of income on the disclosure form he filed with the House of Representatives. The National Republican Campaign Committee paid for the commercial.
  • Alliance With Rep. Joe Walsh (R-McHenry)—Dold is accused of being aligned with Walsh and the Tea Party in this ad funded by the House Majority PAC.
  • Schneider Will Raise Taxes—The Dold campaign paid for this commercial accusing Schneider of supporting a $7,000 tax increase for Illinois families.
  • Dold the Partisan—The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee purchased this commercial claiming Dold is not independent but a staunch Republican.
  • Schneider Raises All Taxes but His—The Congressional Leadership Fund claims Schneider wants substantial tax hikes while not disclosing his tax returns.
  • Dold the Republican—The Schneider campaign literally paints a picture of Dold as strong Republican partisan.

For this election, Patch will keep its poll open until noon Monday and publish results before the voting begins Tuesday.

We moved to Deerfield in 1983. Raised our family here. Children went to Walden, Shepard, and Deerfield High School. Now the Schneider Campaign tells me that since I'm a conservative Republican and Tea Party supporter, I don't belong here any more. I suppose they think we should move to a Congressional District in Illinois where the Democratic Party allows token Republican representation or maybe get out of the State altogether.

Well we're not leaving. If Mr. Schneider wins, we're going to insist that he represent us too.

I'm a Democrat and never felt that because Dold is a Republican who was supported in the past by the Tea Party that he wanted me to leave. What makes you think Mr. Schneider would want you to leave? Surely, since 1983 you've been represented by someone you didn't vote for. Just because of that, you think you would not be a constituency he's interested in helping? Very narrow minded and not very Democratic (as in Democracy). Our Representatives are charged with representing us all. In Dold's case he is representing more than the bank lobby and right wing special interest groups that are trying to get him re-elected.

RB,

Watch the "paint" commercial. What do they say? Yuck, Republican, totally Republican. Tea Party. Not acceptable here.

Okay, the "pint" commercial says that. It's also obviously a canned commercial probably playing in lots of Districts with different candidate data. Nonetheless I see your point but disagree that the 10th is in danger of many citizens being unrepresented despite who wins. Now, if I lived in a District with Joe Walsh, I would be terrified about his 'representing' me. Absolutely nothing in common. He can't possibly show empathy for any of my our most sensible peoples needs.

Are you serious? Do you really believe what you are saying? If this is the way the Tea Party followers think then you are being severely misled. I truely hope that you are smarter than your comments make you sound. We are still in the USA , the greatest democracy in the world, and we do stongly defend our freedom, the right to speak and the right to vote (even in Alsaka). I don't care who you vote for but please do it with some intelegence and do some real political facts homework before you vote. Don't just rely on political commercials or e-mail stories sent to you by your fellow Tea Party friends. I will point out that some residents actually were cast out of Deerfield in the 1960's --- for burning crosses in a black family's front yard. If you are thinking about doing something like that then maybe you should be worried. Otherwise do a quick reality check.

Regarding claims that Dold doesn't pay his serfs any overtime...below is the conversaton between Dold's lawyer (Stucki Hans) and a former employee. Pay attention to "not to pay him" and to the " oops, this message was not really intended for you." Yeap, not for george or the media or anyone...hahahahha

OK…here is the direct threat that he’s been “dancing around”, though I don’t see the “question” he’s looking for an answer to – assume he wants OT pay in some amount…should we talk (not about paying him but the OT situation itself…?? Hans

Rose Pest followed with a $1500 hush-money check :) Since the amount not paid is more than that...lawsuit had being filled but note the character of Dold...trying whatever tricks his lawyer tells him not only not to pay the overtime due! This is the man you people want to represent you in Congress? Are you all crazy or something?

Mr. Stucki I need your permission to amend my complaint to ad charges of overtime not being paid. It is in your client's best interest that I sue them for ot and not let a lawyer do it so give your permission (and blessing hahahahha). I am looking forward to your answer. george lemieux.

And now let's wait for Abigail who have being asking for proof allegations against dold are false. Dear Abigal...is this proof enough you are not open-minded and don't want any proof but rather anyone complaining against /dold to just shut up and go away? Email george and he will forward the messages, and copy of the hush money check if you need paper proof but I doubt it...you never wanted any proof. Kirk's stroke must have affected your jusdgment as well.

I was intrigued by the Johnson commercial. The Republicans and Democrats both acknowledge that Medicare is in trouble for future generations. $68 Trillion in unfunded guarantees. Mr. Schneider and the Democrats attack ruthlessly any and all plans submitted by the Republicans to save it. However, you don't see Republican attacks against Democrat plans to save it. Why is that? Just go to Mr. Schneider's own website to see his ideas for saving it. (http://schneiderforcongress.com/issues/social-security-medicare-and-medicaid/) There you will find him attacking Congressman Dold and the Republicans but no ideas of his own. Nothing but platitudes.

Who cares who stretched the truth the most!?!?!?!?

Both of these guys campaigned on issues that they BARELY have any affect on, and the district TOTALLY bought into it and let them get away with.

Every year, I get more and more disgusted with the electorate. But this is a race where "WE" could have directed the ship. Instead, we were killed by ads from outside PACs and issues that these guys have almost no power over.

In this heated political climate, they are going to vote along party lines in any close vote. FINE. Now did anybody ask what they are doing for the district? No.

Overtime. Tax returns. WHO CARES?!?!?

We're all suckers.

Loser, overtime affects you as you work for a living. If you elect someone who doesn't pay overtime because he has money for lawyers you are pathetic. .

Dold's supporter...you're the 2nd type of liberal I mentioned last week....those jealous and critical of what other people make. Liberals always want something - more and more and more of our money. Get your hands out of my pocket...mine aren't in yours!!!!! You must be a relative of schneider because Dold is a moderate, (what this Country needs) not a RICH liberal with ghetto guilt like Schneider.
