Sheyman-Schneider Bickering Intensifies

Race gains national attention.

Continuing attacks between Democratic opponents is ratcheting up the intensity for Tuesday’s primary contest to earn the right to challenge Rep. Robert Dold (R-Kenilworth) in the Nov. 6 general election.

In the midst of the bickering, the race drew national attention as a column Tuesday by Stuart Rothenberg in Roll Call claimed Republicans believe a candidacy by Waukegan community organizer Ilya Sheyman is Dold’s best bet to hold the seat.

Most of the attention is about donations Deerfield management consultant Brad Schneider made to Republicans in the last 12 years.

The claims are being pushed by phone calls and advertising from MoveOn and other organizations backing Sheyman committed to helping a progressive gain the nomination. Sheyman worked for MoveOn before entering the race for Congress.

Schneider first discussed donations to Sen. Mark Kirk (R-Highland Park) among others in an interview with Patch in May. “Ninety percent of my donations have been to Democrats and 100 percent have been to support the U.S.-Israel relationship,” Schneider said.

Schneider never thought his support of Israel would be used to hurt him. “To use my support of the U.S.-Israel relationship as a tool to twist my progressive, lifelong values is shameful,” he said.

Before speaking at a rally for Sheyman Monday, former Vermont Gov. Howard Dean told Patch Schneider’s donations disqualify him as a progressive or someone who can attract the independent voters important in the 10th District.

Howard Dean Attacks Schneider

“Independents want someone who will stand up for what they believe in,” Dean said. “They don’t want someone like Brad Schneider who swings back and forth between Republicans and Democrats.”

According to filings with the Federal Election Commission, Schneider has donated $32,030 to candidates with a majority going to Democrats including Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-Evanston), former Rep. Melissa Bean (D-Barrington) and Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA).

Former Buffalo Grove Mayor Elliott Hartstein, who has endorsed Schneider, dismissed Dean’s remarks as twisting the facts.

“To suggest Brad Schneider cannot attract independents is absurd,” Hartstein said. “This is a distortion blown out of proportion because of his support for Israel.”

Sheyman campaign manager Annie Weinberg defended the efforts being made on her boss’s behalf, claiming voters have a right to know everything about all the candidates before making a choice.

"Over the last decade, Brad Schneider has given thousands of dollars to right-wing Republicans,” Weinberg said. “That is an undeniable fact in the public record. Voters have a right to know as they choose someone whom they trust to stand and fight for their values."

Republican Calls All Four Candidates Extreme

Moraine Township Republican Chair Lou Atsaves laughed at charges made by MoveOn’s advertising Schneider is a Republican in disguise.

“If you give 10 percent to Republicans and 90 percent to Democrats, you are a Democrat. If it’s 50-50 or maybe 60-40 you would be an independent,” said Atsaves, a Lake Forest resident. “All four are extreme,” he added referring to the philosophy of Sheyman, Schneider, Long Grove business owner John Tree and Mundelein attorney Vivek Bavda.

In Rotenberg’s column, he writes “They (the Republicans) believe they can portray him (Sheyman) as more extreme, making the district’s upscale voters uncomfortable with his aggressive style and views.”

Weinberg dismisses Rothenberg’s thesis as well. “Our campaign has out-raised all of our opponents this past quarter, including Bob Dold, with the strength of over 16,000 individual donors,” she said. “We have more donors from right here in Illinois than anyone else in the race.”

Tree and Bavda are staying out of the fight. Bavda continues to talk policy laying out his vision for the area and the country. “This is more of a side show,” he said of the Sheyman-Schneider barbs.

Tree remains hopeful voters will turn to him as Sheyman and Schneider fight between themselves.

“I’m disappointed to see fellow Democrats attack each other in this primary,” Tree said. “All Sheyman and Schneider prove is that they can attack each other.  None of that will help us beat Bob Dold in November.”

Sheyman's shameless attacks against Brad Schneider have not only completely turned many people off to him as a candidate, but only shown his youth, naïveté, and immaturity. The meritless claims put forth by the tea party of the left show a complete lack of understanding of the 10th District as well as Brad Schneider's positions. Brad is the only progressive candidate with the experience--he has lived, worked, and raised a family in the 10th District for over 25 years--, leadership, and support to defeat Rep. Dold in November. Congresswomen Melissa Bean, State Representatives Susan Garrett, Julie Hamos, and Jeff Schoenberg all agree that Brad Schneider is the only Democratic candidate for the 10th District.

Sheyman's "shameless attacks"? Are you kidding? Your hyperbole is showing. Brad has an attack ad out now, calling Ilya a "liar". Ilya hasn't told any lie that I can see; he has only recounted Brad's history of political giving. Brad makes snide remarks about Ilya's "youth", and compares him to the Tea Party. Isn't this just as "shameless"? "Living, working and raising a family" in the district does not qualify one for office. Ilya has worked in the political arena, and knows how to build coalitions - and yes, compromise and reaching across the aisle is necessary to do this - in order to move the country forward on a myriad of issues. And especially, with Santorem as a possible presidential candidate, we need a dependable progressive voice in Congress.

The only reason Brad has an ad out now countering Ilya's claims is because Ilya began the negativity in the first place. Extreme distortions of the truth are circling through the 10th district because of Ilya's campaign and outside groups. These distortions, along with the numerous hateful robocalls and mailers that I have gotten are, to me, shameless attacks.

Ms. Kraines - perhaps Ilya has been working in the political arena, but for how many years? And how many years has Brad been working as a management consultant, growing small businesses, and understanding the concerns and needs of the 10th district? If I understand correctly, Brad has been accomplishing all of this for as many years as Ilya has been alive. To me, that says more than any ad or robocall.

Sh,
“Brad is the only progressive candidate with the experience”?
News flash:
Actions speak louder than words! And Brad ain’t no “Progressive”!
Brad’s support of
1.) Kirk
2.) right-wing, anti-choice, pro-gun Republicans, such as Bob Bennett, R-UT and Mike Johanns
3.) Blue-Dogs like Bean, Hoyer, and Joe Lieberman
is proof-positive that Brad is barely a Democrat, let alone a “Progressive” Democrat.
Republicans that Brad invested in stood in the way of
1.) A fair, equitable, **progressive** tax code
2.) Healthcare reform
3.) Meaningful Wall Street reform
4.) The Public Option
5.) The Dream Act
6.) The President’s jobs bill (twice)
When Brad chooses to self-label as a “Progressive,” real Progressives like me feel like we’re being toyed with.

The election is very close, so of course there is "bickering", as each candidate seeks to define himself. They both sound similar on the issues, and as first time candidates, have no public record with which to define themselves - so their past behavior must be "mined" to get a sense of who they are, and how they will govern.
Brad calls himself progressive, but I don't know any progressive who would give money to conservatives like Johanns and Bennett - even if it's onlly 10%. Brad is not being vilified because of his support of Israel. Democrats strongly and passionately support Israel, so one wonders why he would have to contribute to Johanns et al for that reason. And Ilya is "radical"? I wonder which of these views meets that criteria - quality education for all students, a jobs bill to upgrade infrastructure, energy independence, affordable health care, union rights? If Ilya wins the primary, and I think he will, Mr. Dold should quake in his boots. Ilya knows the issues inside and out, debates with passion and conviction, and represents the views and needs of the people in this district.

Ms. Kraines, I think "bickering" might be a light word to use to describe the slew of negative mailers, robo calls, and personal attacks at candidate forums that Ilya Sheyman, his campaign, and outside groups have perpetuated against Brad Schneider. Since when do a small number of donations to Republicans (all in the context of the issue of Israel) make someone a radical Right-Wing Republican? This type of party purity is dangerous for our country. Ilya Sheyman may adhere to a strict party ideology, but the voters in the 10th District do not. Furthermore, if Ilya Sheyman ends up in Congress (which he won't), it is doubtful based on his own positions and statements that he would be willing to work with Republicans on any issue (unless if they abandon their positions and adhere to his own far-left ideology). Ilya Sheyman and MoveOn do not represent the 10th District as a whole, and their overbearing presence in the district (and in my phone and mailbox) is unwarranted and embarrassing.

Well, the Chicago Tribune, Politico, The Hill, and numerous figures like Buffalo Grove Mayor and Julie Hamos seem to agree that Ilya is lying. And frankly, I agree as well. Ilya is not merely stating that Brad gave a small portion of his political donations to Republicans, he is making it seem as though he has given a majority of his donations to Republicans. Furthermore, Sheyman has then characterized Brad Schneider as a conservative Republican because of this small portion of his donations. If Ilya merely stated that Schneider gave less than 10% of his donations over his lifetime to Republicans, that would be a fact, but the speculation Sheyman has derived from it is ridiculous.

I do not believe that anything Ilya or his campaign states re: Brad’s past contributions qualifies as a lie!
As poster, Carol Kraines said, your hyperbole is showing.
Apparently (according to you) the Chicago Tribune, Politico, The Hill, and Julie Hamos have all called Ilya a liar.
Hmmm.
Do you have links? Do share. I’d like to see them!

SH. It is going to be a mean and nasty general election. All you need do is look at the "Team America" website if you doubt the power of their negative energy and self-serving vision of the road to nowhere.

So think some bland nice guy playing the "sort of "Mitt Romney role...like Brad (or Tree) can win? Guess again. When pressed, Schneider has no experience, business, government, community service credentials. Tree is late to the game. At least Sheyman stands a fighting chance because he is aggressive, and if he must go negative, that's just the way it is, and I want a candidate who can go negative on an incumbent dolt and stop him in his tracks. Brad impressed me as an unemployed wimp who has zero accomplishments on his resume.

We could have an endorsement contest ie Howard Dean, Sierra Club, who support Ilya and don't think he's "lying", but that would be silly. If Brad can't handle the mild criticism from Ilya's campaign, how is he going to handle what Dold throws at him? The Republicans will stop at nothing to keep this seat. Ilya can handle it with aplomb - and without whining.

Sheyman's supporters insinuate Schneider is a criminal while Sheyman himself claims that he single-handedly organized 5 million people for real health care, all the while shying away from what his much smaller than 5 million strong local MoveOn actually did to fight single payer health care reform. Schneider asks "who is Ilya Sheyman?" seemingly insinuating that this local boy is some sort of a suspicious person and calls out well known and basically open and up-front progressive groups as mysterious "special interest groups." They're both off track and the only one more off track is Lou Atsaves claiming that progressive values, what we all used to all call American values, are extremist while his party puts forth the extreme flip flopper (Romney) against the extreme religious kook who wants to end separation of church and state (Santorum) as presidential nominees. This is why Sheyman and Schneider need to be abandoned by district Democrats, so we can send someone we can be proud of to Congress. We'll need someone like John Tree to fight for us in Congress if either Romney or Santorum become president.

Speaking of local candidates with dubious resumes, what has happened with the pride of Team America...state house candidate Turelli?

If one hiccup is unearthed in Schneider's resume, he's finished. I doubt that resume has been thoroughly vetted

Well, Brad says he's a consultant and without more, it's hard to tell what that means. From his background, it looks like he's in insurance and the financial industry. I'd ask him what he thinks about financial industry regulation if I thought he'd answer.

and to answer your question, Turelli has a primary opponent. She didn't show up to the LWV debate in Highland Park, so she must be thinking he's not much of a threat. I'd have no idea if she's correct in that or not. He spoke at length at the LWV event, probably against their own rules, and he's basically against anything that helps anyone except wealthy health care executives.

John Tree is clearly starting to sound like the best Dem candidate the more and more I read. Hopefully it's not too late for him to win given all the press and money that Schneider and Sheyman have been hogging

Sorry for the above typo! John is an excellent candidate, but he got into the race too late to be viable. And Sheyman and Schneider did not "hog" the attention. They got in early and worked very hard to attract voters to their respective candidacies. Ilya had no money and no establishment support, but built a large, enthusiastic organization one coffee, one speech, one small donation, at a time. It is a credit to his force of personality and organizational skills. That's why he's a winner.

Thanks for the concern, Erik. So sorry you're unable to make an argument for your own candidate. Don't worry about me. I'm quite happy with my political life and political family.

Whomever the candidate against "DOLD" is the winner - let's get behind him and get rid of the "DOLT"
