Viccino’s Pizza Wins Pizza Bowl

Highland Park pizzeria takes inaugural contest benefitting District 113 Foundation.

Viccino’s was voted best pizza in Highland Park or Deerfield Sunday at the first annual Pizza Bowl at Deerfield High School but the big winner was the District 113 Education Foundation.

More than 200 people attended the inaugural event at Deerfield High School sampling cheese pizza from eight different pizzerias in Deerfield or Highland Park with Viccino’s coming out on top with Lou Malnati’s second and Moccio’s third.

The outcome will bring a $25 dollar donation from Deerfield Mayor Harriet Rosenthal who lost a bet on the outcome to Highland Park Mayor Nancy Rotering. Rotering will make a $10 contribution to the Foundation. All proceeds from the night went to the Foundation.

Deerfield High School Science Department Chair Judi Leupke was working at one of the booths handing out slices of pizza. She was happy for the crowd and appreciative the money raised will help Deerfield and Highland Park High Schools.

“This is a really nice turnout,” Leupke said. “The Foundation provides grants to teachers to spend on their classes to help education their students.”

Rep. Brad Schneider (D-Deerfield), who made education one of the centerpieces of his campaign for Congress, was at the event with his son, Daniel Schneider, a Deerfield High School senior. “For people who like pizza this is very good,” he said. “It’s good to see so many people here donating to (the) District 113 (Foundation).

The other participating restaurants are Dominos, Il Forno (Highland Park), Il Forno (Deerfield), NY Slices, and Rosati’s.
