Walmart Shows Interest in Northbrook
Retail giant will make proposal at next board meeting for bid for the lot near Skokie Blvd. and Dundee Rd.
Walmart will make its initial presentation for a store near the intersection of Skokie Blvd. and Dundee Road at Tuesday’s Northbrook Village Board meeting, according to Village President Sandy Frum.
"I'm not cutting them off," Frum said at Pinstripes on Monday during the annual State of the Village presentation. "I want them to make their case, I want the community to make its case."
The presentation by the retail giant will take place at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Northbrook Village Hall. This will be the closet Walmart store to Deerfield. The closet locations now are in Wheeling and Vernon Hills.

Keep that scummy company out of Deerfield!!!! I don't care how bad the retail is. I want NO part of them.
On the other hand, I hope someone is smart enough to make a call to their top two or three competitors.

No, I am not going to say Wal-Mart is a victim. By modern measures of business success, they have done a spectacular job. To be honest, I chose to frequent Wal-Mart's competition more often than Wal-Mart. However, I am all for the free market, and Wal-Mart would be wildly successful in Deerbrook. For those of you who don't like Wal-Mart, you don't have to shop there.

Meijer would be a natural to take over the Wonder spot, they took a KMart spot in Niles so they are not afraid to remodel instead of build. The problem....the teeny tiny dirty little Jewel store can keep them out due to lease terms. Tearing down the whole center and starting again in this economy is next to impossible, it's a real problem. Our Village is literally paying through higher and higher taxes for a Board that has remained focused on the wrong areas.

I recommend watching the movie made in 2005 about Walmart; "The High Cost of Low Price." This is a really terrible company. I say Boycott this store. There are many other stores that are much better and treat their employees with dignity and respect.

Anybody have any REAL insight into this process?
I'd be interested to know why Walmart (and maybe Mariano's) covet this space, but seemingly have no interest in a somewhat established space like Deerbrook. Does the Jewel lease hold THAT MUCH leverage? Shame on the developers if it does. And how much does it cost to get the incredibly horrible corporate caretaker of Jewel to back down?
No, I don't want Walmart but I'd be real interested to know why things are moving ahead in an undeveloped (for lack of a better word) area, while Deerbrook sits idle with seemingly little interest.
