Warrior Duo Puts NU in NCAA Sweet 16
Calistri scores winning goal for Wildcats.
Former Deerfield High School soccer players Joey Calistri and Scott Lakin teamed up to lead Northwestern University to a 1-0 victory over Marquette Sunday in Milwaukee to put the Wildcats in the Sweet 16 of the NCAA tournament, according to a story in the Chicago Tribune.
Lakin, a 2010 Warrior graduate, rebounded a free kick as Calistri, a freshman, put a one touch shot into the upper right corner of the goal giving Northwestern the game’s only score in the 31st minute, according to the Tribune story.
"We knew this was going to be a very tough game, and we knew that chances were going to be few and far between so that we had to take them when we had them," Calistri said in the Daily Northwestern. "We also had to play lockdown defense — which I think we did very well."
The Wildcats now face Louisville, the 10th seed and a 5-0 winner over Winthrop Sunday, according to the NCAA website. The game is in Louisville. Northwestern, not seeded, defeated No. 7 rated team in Marquette.
Though Northwestern has made three trips to the Sweet 16 in the last six years, it is new and exciting for Calistri. "It's absolutely crazy to think we're playing in the Sweet Sixteen next week,” Calistri said in the Daily Northwestern. “It's going to be a tough game. I mean, it's the third round of the NCAA Tournament. We aren't going to overlook anybody, and we are going to be ready."
Calistri was the leading scorer in Deerfield High School history, according to previews reports on Patch. He was Northwestern’s leading scorer this season.
