A solid team performance pushed the Deerfield High School girls’ track team to a second-place finish in the Giant Relays March 9 at the Highland Park High School indoor track.
Every event in the meet was a relay even the field events, according to Warrior Coach Jeff Beaumont. “For high jump, we add the height our three girls cleared to get a total score which determines our place in that event,” Beaumont said.
A highlight of the meet was a 5-4½ leap by Hayley Dorfman to set a high jump record for the Giant track. She eclipsed the 30-year-old mark of Deerfield alumna Martha Caflisch. Her previous best was 5-2.The trio of Dorfman, Alexis Borg and Hadley Lloyd placed second.
“She had cleared 5-1, then 5-2, then 5-3, so as the bar was going up and up people were starting to take notice,” Beaumont said. “By the time she got to the record height there were many fans around the high jump area watching and cheering her on.”
The one winning Warrior relay quartet was the 50-meter low hurdle shuttle relay team of Christine Stitcher, Rachel Gordon, Megan Petrey and Kate Henry.
Other second place finishers were the long jump relay (Alana Hirsch, Michela Emmerich and Elah Shulruff), the four-lap relay (Penelope Danos, Dorfman, Sami Katz and Grace Joseph) and the 4x400 (Phoebe Block, Joseph, Kate Henry and Dorfman).
Four teams earned third place honors. They were the triple jump (Henry, Sami Scheck and Kezia DiGioia), the 4x800 ( Abbey Osborn, Lloyd, Henry, Brittany Silvers and Elizabeth Zwart), the 4x400 class event (Shulruff, Rachel Gordon, Block and Silvers) and the Distance Medley race (Hirsch, Sam Houser, Zwart and Lloyd).
