Warriors Send 5 Gymnasts to State Meet

Volleyball team breezes to York Invitational title.

Brian Spinello and Jeff Spinello qualified for three events each in the State Gymnastics Meet in today’s Sectional at Mundelein while Jack Schneider, Alex Cimaglia and Robert Suszek will compete in one each.

The Final Score:        1. Mundelein 152.75, 2. Buffalo Grove 150.7, 3. Palatine 135.25, 4. Fremd 135, 5. Deerfield 133.6

Warriors Star Performers:   Brian Spinello took second place in floor exercise (9.25) and third in the parallel bars (9.0). He also qualified in the vault. Jeff Spinello tied twin brother Brian for second on floor (9.25) while also making the grade in vault and horizontal bars.

Other Notable Warrior Performances:        Schneider took fifth (9.0) in floor to advance to State. Cimaglia  and Suszek qualified on parallel bars. 

Who’s Next:   The advancing Warriors take part in the State Meet at 5 p.m. Friday and noon Saturday at Lincoln Way East High School in Frankfurt. 

Volleyball 

The Final Score:        Deerfield defeated Joliet Central, 25-7, 25-8; Hinsdale Central, 25-12, 25-20; Addison Trail, 25-21, 25-15 and Rolling Meadows, 25-22, 25-20. 

Warriors Star Performers:   Zach Hara, John Harlan and Jordan Fine led the way on offense. Hara recorded 29 kills, 14 digs and 14 blocks while Harlan had 28 kills, 10 digs and four aces. Fine handed out 65 assists along with 14 digs, three aces and a kill. 

Other Notable Warrior Performances:       Kenison Ready added 13 kills, 4.5 blocks and three digs while Jake Brody chipped in with 19 digs and three aces. Adam Nadler scored with seven kills, 14 digs and four aces while Eli Schmidt had 11 kills, nine digs, five blocks and an ace. Eric Slepian helped out with six kills and a dig. 

Who’s Next:   The Warriors travel to Lakes at 6 p.m. Monday. 

The Bottom Line:      Deerfield breezed through four opponents in straight sets to win the York Invitational. The Warriors improved their record to 21-3 for the season and are also 7-1 in the Central Suburban League North Division.
