Wild Finish Ends in 3-3 Tie for Deerfield, New Trier

Two penalties and two goals in the final three minutes leads to tie between Warriors and Trevians.

The Deerfield and New Trier hockey teams played to a 3-3 tie Wednesday night at the Winnetka Ice Arena.  Neither team was happy with the final score, but the final three minutes provided an entertaining ending.

With 2:30 left in a 2-2 game, Deerfield freshman Mike Wiggemansen picked up a minor penalty, leaving the Warriors short handed.  Thirty seconds later, Daniel Spitz capitalized on the power play for New Trier, picking up the go-ahead goal with 1:30 left to play.  However, Spitz was called for unsportsmanlike conduct following the goal and he had to take a seat in the penalty box, leaving the Trevians short handed for the final 90 seconds.

Deerfield wasted no time taking advantage of their own power play opportunity. Wiggemansen picked up the puck along the side boards and fired a perfect cross-ice pass to the waiting stick of senior Sam Rogers.  His one-timer found the back of the net with 1:05 left to play in the game.  Rogers' team-leading 10th goal of the year helped the Warriors pick up their third straight tie.

After a scoreless first period, the Warriors and Trevians traded goals in the second.  Mikey Yablong and Woody Steinken scored for New Trier, while Wiggemansen and Nick Puccio brought in points for Deerfield.  Puccio's goal, his first of the season, came with just 26 seconds left in the period.

With the tie, Deerfield picked up their ninth point of the year and pulled into a three way tie with Loyola and Highland Park for eighth place in the Metro North Standings.
