Residents Want Art Center at Deerbrook

A majority want the shuttered theaters to become an arts venue, but most want private financing.

An arts center is the preferred use of the shuttered theaters at the rear of the Deerbrook Mall by more than half the readers who responded to the latest unscientific Patch Poll gauging interest in such a project. Of the 137 people who answered Patch’s questions, 83 want to see some kind of art center in the space while 54 would rather see the theaters demolished as part of the existing renovation plan. Of the 83 who want the art center, 20 would be willing to pay additional taxes but the other 63 want private financing. Earlier: Should Deerbrook Theaters Become Art Center? One reader, Larry Mason, thinks examples set in places like Highland Park, Skokie and Highwood are ones Deerfield could follow. “Deerfield has a long tradition of …

Logic and Sewing Make Local Artist

Wayne Rhodes combines skills from his vocation with his passion to create quilts.

What do quilting and computer systems analysis have in common? The junction of these two skills came together for Deerfield artist Wayne Rhodes and comprise the display this month on the art wall at the Patty Turner Center. When you put sewing and logic together you come up with quilting,” Rhodes said. He has made more than 100 over the last 17 years and a good representation is now on display. His passion for manual creation started when he was young. “I always did something with my hands,” Rhodes said. “I made model planes when I was a boy. When my children were young I made their Halloween costumes but that was only once a year and they got bigger.” Not long after, Rhodes began making quilts. Some he makes for the sheer enjoyment of …

"That has attracted great attention, and could bring us new audiences as well."... At some point, I have to wonder if the sales taxes are worth the crazy traffic, increased pollution, noise, and even increased crime from some of those audience members or their acquaintances. I'm not trying to be xenophobic, but it just seems to me that what used to be a nice place (in the middle of some really …   more ›

Long waits didn't stop people from buying tickets to Santana, Train and James Taylor.

As of 4:40 p.m. on Thursday, lawn seats were all that remained for these shows: The thousands of fans that logged onto Ravinia's website to buy tickets on the festival's busiest ticket sales day in history had to wait at least 30 minutes to get them, though for many the wait was much longer. Patch reader Jennie Moore commented on Patch's Facebook page that she was waiting for over …

The work of Deerfield photographer and graphic designer Michael Zidman is displayed this month on the Art Wall at the Patty Turner Center. When describing his work, Zidman compares the effort of a photographer to that of a painter transferring the image viewed by his eye to a picture people can enjoy.  “My camera is the brush, the colors in the subjects are my palette and the prints are my canvases,” Zidman said. “My objective is to take a simple subject, and, with the use of creative and natural lighting, color, and depth of field and composition, make a pleasing and interesting photograph.” The display includes a series of photographs taken at Chicago’s Millennium Park dubbed “Children at Play” as well as a series of landscapes and …
