Ilya Sheyman is a Democratic candidate for U.S. Congress from Illinois' 10th District.

Sheyman Wins Tenth Dems Straw Poll in Landslide

With 73 percent of the vote, Sheyman campaign demonstrates grassroots power and widespread support two weeks before election

Congressional candidate Ilya Sheyman won the Illinois Tenth District Democrats Straw Poll on Sunday afternoon with an overwhelming 73 percent of the vote, in a show of organizing strength and widespread support with just over two weeks before the primary election.

The complete results of the Tenth District Democrats straw poll were:

Ilya Sheyman - 73%

John Tree - 20%

Brad Schneider - 6%

Vivek Bavda - 1%

“This victory shows, once again, that our people-powered campaign has built a deep base of support across the district and is ready to get out the vote to send a proven progressive to Congress to fight for middle class families,” said Sheyman, the former national Mobilization Director at progressive advocacy group MoveOn.org,

The victory for Sheyman comes on the heels of the announcement that his campaign completed its best fundraising period to date, and that he’d earned endorsements from State Representatives Robyn Gabel and Rita Mayfield.

Marco,
More than 300 10th-District Democrats turned out for this event. Admission was free for all, but only Tenth Dems members received straw-poll ballots. The Tenth Congressional District Democrats, or Tenth Dems for short, has as its core mission helping to elect Democrats to all levels of government throughout the 10th District.
Hope that answers your question.

I understand that Schneider was at AIPAC in DC instead of showing up at the Tenth Dems Convention, where Ilya Sheyman handily won the convention’s straw poll-- with 73 per cent of the votes.
Who does Schneider want to represent?

Schneider had previously made the commitment to attend the AIPAC conference along with President Barack Obama. Small Business Advocacy Council President, Elliot Richardson, spoke on Brad's behalf at the 10th District Convention. But frankly, to decry Brad for attending the most important policy-conference on US-Israel relations is unfair and a shame. Schneider is committed to a strong US-Israel relationship, and missing one event (that frankly garners little importance) is no mistake on his part. I am proud that Brad went to AIPAC, which makes clear to me his strong support of Israel.

I am much more concerned about Ilya's support of Israel because of how he has embraced the endorsement of organizations that have called for a second Gaza Flotilla, harsh sanctions against Israel, and a weakening of US-Israeli bonds.

Whoa SH!
Someone needs to set your record straight!
First, minor point:
Elliot Richardson did NOT speak on Brad's behalf at the 10th District Convention. Buffalo Grove Village President, Elliott Hartstein spoke. I know it’s confusing—all those Elliots! I know who spoke for Brad because I was actually at the convention. Were you?
Second and very major:
I assume that since you are making disparaging remarks about Ilya’s supposedly questionable support of Israel, you are prepared to back them up with proof.

My mistake, I meant Elliot Hartstein (though Schneider is endorsed by SBAC President Elliot Richardson). However, I thought it was common knowledge that Progressive Democrats of America (PDA), whose endorsement Ilya Sheyman has accepted, passed a resolution in September which called for a second Gaza Flotilla. PDA has also engaged in lobbying to end US military aid to Israel and to weaken the relationship between the United States and Israel.

Furthermore, Sheyman has noted how he looks forward to working with Congressman Jesse Jackson Jr. if he is elected. Jesse Jackson Jr. is currently under House and Federal investigation for attempting to buy Barack Obama's senate seat from former Governor Rod Blagojevich. The 10th District does not need a candidate who is embraced such groups.

However, the point here is larger. Just because Ilya has been endorsed by some controversial groups, does not mean he has to adhere to their every position. It is actually fine for Ilya to accept the endorsement of these groups, and I do not assume he supports every single one of their positions. However, the same logic should be applied to Schneider.

I am not anti-Israel, yet I do not condone the Israeli government's oppressive tactics. It is hypocritical for someone to denounce oppression from one country, but not another. Not all AIPAC lobbyists are sincere in their wishes for Israel. If the end goal for some is to have a strong Israel with only Jews for the purpose of Armagedden occurring, I want nothing to do with that. I also want nothing to do with bombing another Muslim country back into the dark ages.

Stop right there, SH.
This guilt-by-association tactic is utter nonsense. It was nonsense when Obama was deemed guilty of being a friend to Bill Ayers. It was nonsense when Obama was deemed guilty of attending the Rev. Jeremiah Wright’s church. And it is absolute nonsense now in the case of Ilya’s endorsements.
What’s the difference, you might ask, when the Sheyman campaign points out Brad Schneider’s ties to Mark Kirk and other Republicans?
Simple:
Your candidate, Brad Schneider is sending out mailer after mailer claiming to be a “Progressive” Democrat. Clearly that’s the image Schneider’s strategists decided he needs to project to be competitive in this race. It is a naïve ploy at best, or deeply cynical on his part.
Do you all even understand what a “Progressive” Democrat is?

I'm happy you agree with me that the guilty-by-association tactic is "utter nonsense" (your words not mine). That is the point that I was trying to bring up and the point that Brad has brought up in multiple debates. Ilya seems to be too immature to recognize, as you have, that this tactic is foolish.

SH,
Actions speak louder than words.
Brad’s support of
1.) Kirk
2.) right-wing, anti-choice, pro-gun Republicans
3.) Blue-Dogs like Bean, Hoyer, and Joe Lieberman
is proof-positive that Brad is barely a Democrat, let alone a “Progressive” Democrat.
Republicans that Brad invested in stood in the way of
1.) A fair, equitable, **progressive** tax code
2.) Healthcare reform
3.) The Public Option
4.) The Dream Act
5.) The President’s jobs bill (twice)
When Brad chooses to self-label as a “Progressive,” real Progressives like me feel like we’re being toyed with. Quite frankly, it’s like a kick in the stomach. Real Progressives like me get shouted down on a daily basis for our beliefs, which aren’t very popular in some circles to say the least. Real Progressives like me know that anyone can say anything to separate me from my vote.
You seem to be working for Mr. Schneider’s campaign. You can let him know why he has no business using the P word. You can let him know that real Progressives like me would have had a great deal more respect for him had he run as a Moderate.

Liz and flower child are exactly right. Real progressives do not donate to Republicans who've voted against fair pay and choice - even if they themselves would support those things. Real progressives are not single-issue voters, even if that single issue is Israel. We have come so far and should be thrilled that recent 10th district candidates have been strongly pro-Israel, so to use this as a wedge, or as a poor excuse for supporting Mark Kirk, is either disingenuous or ill-informed. And Sheyman can't be held responsible for all the views of everyone who endorses him - no one can or should be.
