Residents Want Art Center at Deerbrook

A majority want the shuttered theaters to become an arts venue, but most want private financing.

An arts center is the preferred use of the shuttered theaters at the rear of the Deerbrook Mall by more than half the readers who responded to the latest unscientific Patch Poll gauging interest in such a project. Of the 137 people who answered Patch’s questions, 83 want to see some kind of art center in the space while 54 would rather see the theaters demolished as part of the existing renovation plan. Of the 83 who want the art center, 20 would be willing to pay additional taxes but the other 63 want private financing. Earlier: Should Deerbrook Theaters Become Art Center? One reader, Larry Mason, thinks examples set in places like Highland Park, Skokie and Highwood are ones Deerfield could follow. “Deerfield has a long tradition of …

Neither Case nor Jean Spagnoli of the Deerfield Building Department know the name of the store yet. A building permit is affixed to the door of the structure in downtown Deerfield. Deerfield Builder Sued for Fraud

Contractor says he ran out of money.

A Deerfield builder was accused of consumer fraud in a civil lawsuit filed Monday by Cook County State’s Attorney Anita Alvarez for “bilking a senior citizen couple,” according to a news release from the State’s Attorney’s Office. Upscale Design Corporation, Value Built Construction, with offices in Deerfield and Lincolnwood, and their owner, George Zachery of Deerfield, were sued for agreeing to demolish a Chicago south side roof for an elderly couple, beginning the job and failing to complete it. “I started the job but I ran out of money,” Zachery told Patch Monday. His discussion with Patch was the first he knew of the pending litigation. “I did not commit fraud. The state’s attorney wanted me to make restitution. I wanted to work …

Should Deerbrook Theaters Become Art Center?

Voice your opinion in the latest Patch Poll. Could the closed theaters at the rear of the Deerbrook Mall become an art center?

If the embryonic plans to redevelop the Deerbrook Mall come to fruition, the four theaters which have been closed for years will be demolished. Could there be a different plan for those structures? When the ownership of the former Multiplex was no longer able to operate the facility that was the pre Berto Center training facility of the Chicago Bulls, it became the Sachs Recreation Center operated by the Deerfield Park District. Could some form of public-private partnership be possible to turn those theaters into an art center? When Patch first wrote about the plans of people affiliated with the shopping center’s redevelopment last month, reader Tony Horwitz raised the possibility. “(We could have) small to medium live music/local theater/…

In its present configuration, that theater space has zero appeal, which goes a long way toward explaining its demise. The backside of the mall? Yuck. Whatever you do there, if it isn't attractive and pedestrian-friendly, it's a dead duck. I think mixed use is the most effective way to structure this property--and may be for Cadwell's Corners too. Hotel, apartments, and/or senior-living, in …   more ›

Week in Review: Readers Like Deerbrook Stories

Readers have no lack of opinion about how to develop the property.

Patch’s two most popular stories this week were about the efforts of the group trying to redevelop the Deerbrook Mall and the Village to breathe new life into the more than 40-year old shopping center. After the Village Board of Trustees unanimously approved hiring a financial advisor at its Monday meeting to help with a potential sales tax rebate program, Patch was able to talk to people affiliated with the redevelopment effort. A few readers chimed in on the Village’s efforts when the story was published Tuesday, but a lot of readers offered their thoughts Wednesday when Patch reported which stores would be moving where and which might be changing locations. The idea of T.J. Maxx becoming more prominent was criticized by a number of …

Failed Center of the North Shore Site Could See Buyer This Summer

Northbrook has received at least a dozen inquiries from developers interested in buying the foreclosed 14-acre site at the northwest corner of Skokie Boulevard and Dundee Road.

A buyer could emerge this summer for a 14-acre foreclosed property at the Dundee Road and Skokie Boulevard, once planned as the site of a mixed-use development whose partners were charged with federal mortgage fraud.  At least 12 developers have contacted the village about the property in the past few months, according to Tom Poupard, director of development and planning services. “We actually decided we were getting so many calls that we put something on the [village] web site just to try and give everybody the same information,” Poupard said. The site fell into foreclosure in 2008 when developers couldn’t come up with the money for debts on a planned 517,000-square-foot mixed-use development called the Center of the North Shore. Last …

Poll: What Should Move into the Dundee Road and Skokie Boulevard Site?

Should the space have restaurants, offices, hotels, apartments or something different?

Northbrook Patch reported Tuesday that, in the past few months, at least 12 developers have contacted the Village of Northbrook to inquire or express interest about a 14-acre foreclosed property near the intersection of Dundee Road and Skokie Boulevard. On May 1, Colliers International, broker for the site, released an offering memorandum for sale of the property in which it began seeking bids for purchase. With the June 8 bid deadline fast approaching, the site could soon have a new owner and developer attempting to attract tenants. So we want to know: if you had your choice, what would you like to see happen to the site? Stay up to date on the latest Northbrook news by signing up for our free morning newsletter. The property is …

I agree...anything but more stores or restaurants. Having lived here 20 yrs and in my mid 40's, every restaurant in that area has also failed. Whatever goes there, make sure it isn't something that will cause more congestion on Sunset Ridge Rd. The traffic there at rush hour is horrific. Speeders from offices all around use it a s a cut through on a 2 lane 35 mph back road. More GREEN!   more ›

Deerbrook Plans to Move Some Stores

Village hopes to receive sales tax rebate plan next month.

More details of the renovation of the Deerbrook Mall and the Village’s role in it were revealed by Mayor Harriet Rosenthal and Village Manager Kent Street Monday at the Village Board meeting. Some stores will move and all will have outside entrances, according to Street and a source affiliated with the ownership. The interior mall will cease to exist. The Village will consider chipping in with a sales tax rebate that will not reduce current Deerfield income. Earlier: Village Moves To Boost Deerbrook All plans are contingent on the approval of existing tenants accepting the proposed changes, according to the mall source. If that happens, T.J. Maxx could move from the mall interior to the northern end of the shopping center and Jewel will be…

The emails are fine, but you really should consider attending the board meetings. They may be "ceremonial" but I dont agree that nothing gets done there. The problem is too few citizens show up for the meetings and voice their opinions. The meetings are part of the government process, and records are kept of public comments, etc. The best way to get stuff done is to combine a behind the scenes …   more ›
