A small batch brewery on the North Shore has some options for those of you looking to bring a delicious, local beer to your Memorial Day celebration.
Heading to a Memorial Day barbecue this weekend and looking to bring something more creative than buns or brats? Try some really tasty beer. After finishing an interview last week at Inovasi, I stumbled into Lake Bluff Brewery for the first time. Patch has written about these guys before, but I actually didn't know the place existed until reading about it as the final destination of an awesome day-long bike ride in the Chicago Reader. It was around 5 p.m. on Friday when I walked in and the place was packed, but not too busy that the friendly bartender couldn't find time to let me sample a few beers. I tried the Derailleur first, since, for better or for worse, IPAs are typically my starting point. Then, I tried the Skull and Bones Double …

As part of a rollout of wifi hot spots, Comcast is offering anyone, even non-customers, free wifi in a variety of eateries and other settings, through July 4. After that, customers can still use wifi in the many new locations.
There you are, sitting in a restaurant or doctor's waiting room, trying to get on to the Internet with your smartphone, tablet or laptop. But frustratingly, there's no wifi service. Anyone, even non-customers, can access wifi for free on those dates. After that, Comcast customers can access the wifi service for free, and non-customers can get two 60-minute sessions free per month. John des Rosiers discusses why two concepts he had for restaurants in Highland Park failed, and wonders why restaurants in town keep closing.
John des Rosiers thought he had two good ideas for Highland Park. The first was a chef-driven Italian restaurant. That second was a customer-driven, American place. Neither worked out. Earlier: Another Highland Park Restaurant Closes "I thought we had two good ideas that turned out to be two not good ideas," des Rosiers said. Des Rosiers, who owns Inovasi and Wisma in Lake Bluff, opened Moderno in Highland Park last year, in the Renaissance Place location that was formerly Rosebud. When the ambitious menu didn't attract the high volume necessary to make the large space profitable, des Rosiers closed it and went back to the drawing board. A month later, he reopened it as Royce. The idea was to make the new restaurant more customer-friendly…

Night work and potential bonus for contractor helps accelerate roadwork.
Reconstruction of Lake Cook Road is proceeding two weeks ahead of schedule in part because more of the work is being done at night, according to Deerfield’s Project Manager John Guccione. Paving of a portion of Lake Cook Road was set for late Monday night into early Tuesday morning but was postponed until today because of storms. Guccione hopes the work will be done tonight. Earlier: Business Owners Feel Construction Pinch “The project is at least two weeks ahead of schedule,” Guccione said. “The night work is planned (in part) because the (construction) trucks are getting stuck in traffic. The contractor is keeping the cement factories open at night,” he added describing the builder’s commitment. Work is being done at night to ease the …

Village Board will consider allowing people to bring their own beer and wine to local eateries. Trustees will also consider improvements to downtown park and cooperative efforts with other towns to enhance revenue.
Brining your own wine or beer into a Deerfield restaurant may become a reality in the near future. A change to the Village code allowing diners at local restaurants to bring their own wine and beer to consume with a meal is one of the things which the Village Board of Trustees will likely consider next month. Earlier: Village Begins Work on Downtown Plaza BYOB (bring your own bottle) legislation was one of the issues along with a charge for commercial leasing and further development of the park at the northeast corner of Deerfield and Waukegan Roads discussed at a Committee of the Whole meeting May 13. Under the recommendations village staff will make to the Board, diners could bring one bottle of beer or wine with them to consume on the …

Patch readers had a lot to say last month when asked what they thought of a new store policy in which baggers were obliged to follow customers and their carts out to their vehicles whether they wanted help or not.
If you've avoided shopping at Jewel-Osco for fear of being awkwardly trailed to your car by an employee, you're not alone, but there is good news. The once mandatory policy created by Jewel's new owners, Cerberus Capital Management LP, has been repealed. A statement on the store's website says the cart-to-car service will still be offered to customers, but it will no longer be forced upon them. Parts of our customer service philosophy are things that every grocery store should do, like ensuring the stores are clean, the shelves are well stocked, and asking if you need help finding an item. Now, we’ve expanded our service to include taking your groceries out to your car. And, if you don’t want or need help, that’s fine too. Many customers …
