Extended Time for the ACT

Accomodations are available for the ACT to students who can demonstrate special needs.  The most common accomodation is extended time.  This allows students with a variety of learning issues the time required to properly take the test.

Students with an IEP or 504 are usually eligible.  The application must be made through the student's high school, usually by a case manager or counselor.  Diagnostic testing and a history of special accomodations at school are required.

Other accomodations available include testing over two days or having a reader read the exam to the student.  It is important for parents to know which accomodation would be most beneficial to their student and advocate for the best testing situation possible.

Simply allowing a student more time to take the test is often not enough to benefit the student.  For example, many students with ADHD tend to rush through the test and choose answers impulsively.  Without coaching and practice many of these students actually use less than the regular amount of time alloted to each subject.

The ACT is a challenge for students with any type of learning issues.  Preparing them and giving them the best possible testing situation is critical to their success.
