How the ACT is scored

The ACT exam is scored on a scale of 36.  There are four multiple choice subjects and each one is scored on a scale of 1-36.  The four scores are averaged to get the composite score.  This composite is "the ACT score."  Since the composite is the average of the four scores, it takes an improvement of four points to raise the ACT score one point.
The ACT also has an optional writing portion which is not included in the composite score.  The writing score is on a scale of 1-12.  Two readers each give a score from 1-6.  The two readers' scores are added together to get the writing score.  This score is shown on the score report sent to colleges.
The state and national average for the ACT composite score is 21.  Deerfield High School's average is 26.  Students who score higher are usually more public about discussing their scores.  However, many students at DHS score below the average and successfully go to college.
Students should target colleges where their ACT score fits in the average range.  Their applications will be compared to other applicants at each college, so if their score is in the range for that college, they are likely to be accepted.
