Is Tutoring Necessary for the ACT?

Should students get tutoring for the ACT?  For most students, the answer is yes.  The ACT is constructed in a unique format that students are not familiar with.  While some students are intuitively good testers, that is a skill most students do not have.
All students should do some type of preparation for the ACT.  At a minimum, a student should take a complete practice test.  If the score is not the desired score, however, additional practice is needed.  A motivated student can study on his or her own, but would have to be independent enough to devote the necessary amount of time.
For most students, some type of formal study will be required.  The  ACT test is unique and the study should be specific for ACT.  This can be an ACT prep course offered at school, a tutoring company's group study or a private tutor.  The choice depends on the individual student's needs.  Factors to consider are time available, special learning issues and cost.  Each family should make the best decision for their student.
