BJBE Congregants Tour Local Organic CSA Farm to Understand How Their Food is Grown

Congregation BJBE in Deerfield continues their work as part of a cohort of GreenFaith, an interfaith organization whose mission is to inspire, educate and mobilize people of diverse religious backgrounds for environmental leadership.  The Green Team at BJBE, led by Cantor Ross Wolman and co-chairs Todd Katz and Laura Singer, have set a goal to develop environmental awareness in their congregants, create more green initiatives in their synagogue and work towards environmental justice.

This month, a group of congregants ranging in age from 6 years old to seniors took a fieldtrip to Primrose Valley Farm in Belleville, Wisconsin to tour the beautiful property, learn about organic farming, harvest crops to be donated to a local food pantry, and eat locally grown food with David and Jamie Baker.  The Bakers are congregants of BJBE who bought the farm just five years ago and now provide interested members to be a part of their CSA (community supported agriculture) and receive fresh, organic produce from their farm each week.

“Our goal was to allow people to see up close where their food is coming from and the importance of organic farming,” explained Laura Singer.
