Following up on a hugely successful inaugural year, the Visual Arts Department of the North Suburban YMCA will host its second annual juried art show for junior high students, with cash prizes to be awarded by judges from the Northbrook Arts Commission. The competition is open to all students in 6th, 7th and 8th grades, and submitted works will be displayed at the YMCA, located at 2705 Techny Road in Northbrook. The Y will host a reception and awards ceremony on Sunday, November 3 at 4:00pm, and the artwork will remain on display through Thanksgiving.
Last year’s competition showcased artwork by 83 local students, including paintings, pencil drawings, pastels, and metalwork. “We were delighted to see so many artists submitting their work for the competition,” noted Cathie Winnie, NSYMCA Visual Arts Director. “It was a great opportunity for them to have public recognition of their talents, and it inspired many of them to strive for their best work. We hope that even more artists will get involved this year.”
To encourage and support students as they work, the Y’s art staff will hold a free workshop session in the Y art studio on September 27 from 7:00 to 9:00pm. Instructors will offer help and advice to the students, regardless of the stage of their work’s progress. “We can help generate ideas to get a project started, or give feedback to keep it moving forward,” said Winnie. “We want them to be very proud of the work they submit, whether or not they win an award.”
Students may deliver their artwork to the Y’s guest service desk between October 20 and October 31. All submissions must be two-dimensional and ready to hang, preferably framed. The Arts Commission will award prizes for first, second and third place in each of the three grade levels. For more information regarding the contest, contact Cathie Winnie at email@example.com.
