DHS Swim Team Rescues Struggling Shoveler

Winter storm brings out the best in some neighbors.

Like many, Deerfield resident Carol Modes was overwhelmed when she saw the heap of snow Mother Nature landed in her driveway Wednesday. Little did she know, help was on the way.

“They saw me shoveling my driveway with over two feet of snow and volunteered to help finish,” Modes said.

They, meaning a group of seniors on the swim team who decided to put in a workout even though practice was cancelled.

"I had already been outside for 2 1/2 hours earlier shoveling out the sidewalk between my garage and front door. It had drifts up to 3 feet high," Modes explained.  "Then I came out later with my son who didin't get off of work until 4:30. We had the whole driveway to do. It probably would have taken us 3 hours."

Which is why Modes graciously accepted the offer from her neighbor and his friends and did what she could to make sure they knew how much she appreciated it, “I baked them chocolate chip cookies as a thank you.”
