Community Corner

9-11 Day of HOPE, Acts of Kindness

Help make Sunday, 9/11/2011 a Day of Hope.  Several north suburban United Methodist Churches are joining together on the 10th anniversary of the attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentaqon with a day of solemn remembrance and HOPE affirming volunteer action in our communities.  The churches are Christ UMC Deerfield, North Shore UMC Glencoe, Northbrook UMC and Glenview UMC.  This will be an interfaith community mission day with a variety of service projects to support many social service agencies and other groups that help those in need.

Volunteer activities include: cleaning of various village parks; clearing invasive brush in the Lake County Forest Preserve; singing in a nursing home; cleaning and organizing local food pantries; collecting non-perishable food items for a battered women's shelter; making thank you packages for local police and fire departments; making Linus blankets for hospitalized chirldren; fellowship through bingo and board games with residents of One Deerfield Place; cooking, cleaning, making repairs at several facilities that serve the poor or homeless; joining a prayer group; etc.  There's something for everyone of all ages and abilities.

Each participating church will have a 15 minute service starting at 10:00 a.m.  For most projects participants will leave after the service from the church and with a team they wish to participate with.  Nursery service for the little ones will be provided at most churches.
