Lyme Disease Cases in Lake County at Record High
Twenty cases of Lyme Disease have been reported so far this year in Lake County.

Twenty cases of Lyme Disease have been reported in Lake County thus far in 2013, making it a record high for illness. The Lake County Health Department/Community Health Center is advising residents to be aware of ticks, which cause the illness, according to an article by the Daily Herald. Lyme Disease can be treated with antibiotics, but can cause major complications to the heart, the nervous system and the musculoskelton system if left untreated.
"Ticks can transmit a number of serious illnesses, including Lyme disase, through a bite," Tony Beltran, the Lake County Health Department's Executive Director, told the Daily Herald. "They live in and near wooded areas, tall grass and brush, so it is important to use preventative measures including insect repellent when you are in such an environment, even if it is your own backyard."
Lyme disease reportedly strikes about 300,000 people each year, which is 10 times higher than the previous estimate of 30,000, according to a recent article by CBS News. Symptoms include a fever, headache and fatigue, as well as a telltale rash that looks like a bull's-eye around the bite location.
