Prize Winning Baker, 12, Becomes Judge

Annual Deerfield Farmers' Market apple pie contest produces winners and donations to West Deerfield Township Food Pantry.

When Nick Shelton was 11 he became Deerfield’s champion apple pie champion and a year later he is a judge.

Shelton, the 2012 winner, joined two other judges—Rebecca Glover of Deerfield’s Bakery and Lauren Green of Sweeties—Saturday at the Deerfield Farmers’ Market to determine to choose this year’s champion.

The winner was Alison Suhowatsky with Karen Pucket in second and Ilene Schoenfeld third. Once the winners were determined, the pies were cut and offered to the public in exchange for a donation to the West Deerfield Township Food Pantry, according to Farmers' Market Committee member Andi Berkowitz.
