Youth Programs Offered by Deerfield Park District

Here are some upcoming spring programs offered by the Deerfield Park District focusing on creativity, artistic and other special talents.

Babysitting Clinic

Taught by Colleen Mazzetta, this clinic teaches boys and girls age 11-14 to prepare for the responsibilities of babysitting and child care. Course covers first aid, safety in the home, handling an emergency, the needs of the children, recreation and craft ideas, and infant care.

Dates: Saturday, April 13 and 20 and May 11 and 18. Time is 1-4 p.m.

Each two-session class is at a cost of $122 per Deerfield Park District resident and $152 per nonresident. Students who attend all sessions and successfully complete the course will receive a Safe Sitter Certificate.

Youth Ceramics

Teacher Richard Cohen offers participants in grades 1-8 classes that cover the basic techniques of hand-building and throwing (4th grade and up) on the wheel. Students create decorative items while learning different techniques of glazing, decorating, and using surface treatments. Classes are small to provide individual attention, while students work on their own projects at their own pace.

Youth Ceramics is offered Mondays through Thursday, from 4-5:30 p.m. for grades 1-3 and from 5:30-7 p.m. for grades 4-8, at a cost of $140 per student per class.

Saturday classes are from 9:30-11a.m. for grades 1-3 and 11a.m.-12:30 p.m. for grades 4-8 at a cost of $123 per student per class.

Class sizes are limited to no more than 10 students. All classes start the week of April 1. The activity code to register is #352601; section # varies.

Magic Class

This program will be held Monday, April 18, from 5-5:55 p.m. Professional Magician Gary Kantor shows children ages 5-12 fascinating card, rope, coin, mind-reading and other tricks. Children are grouped by age and are taught age-appropriate tricks. All materials are provided. Each child takes home a magic trick.

Balloon Animals

Learn how to make balloon animals and more. Participants between the ages of 6 and 13 will learn to make those cool balloon animals that you see at parties. With just a little practice, learn the techniques needed to take a plain balloon and transform it into a fascinating balloon animal creation (like dogs, butterflies, swords, etc.) and take home all of the items made. This 90-minute class isn’t just for the kids. Parents are welcome to join their children in class (at no extra charge). Instructor for this class is part of the Gary Kantor Magic Team.

This class is offered Monday, April 8 from 6-7:30 p.m. (#352513- Section 01). Fee per child/teen is $26.

Piano Lessons

Students age 3 and older will have the opportunity to learn, play and enjoy the sounds of music. Piano Teacher Alice Rudin has a European Master’s degree in Piano Performing Arts and 30 years of experience teaching piano to beginner through advanced students using traditional and Suzuki Methods. The class is designed to have one-on-one lessons with students in weekly half-hour sessions (or 45-minutes, if requested). The class number is 342502; section # varies.

Half-hour classes are offered between 2 and 8 p.m. on Tuesdays, April 2 through June 4 or between 4 and 8 p.m. on Wednesdays, April 3 through June 5 (for 10 weeks). The class fee is $303 per park district resident or $379 for nonresident.
