Teenagers Tie White Ribbons in Deerfield to Raise Lung Cancer Awareness

Deerfield teenagers ended their Spring Break by tying white ribbons around downtown Deerfield to raise awareness for lung cancer. The effort is a display of support for Breathe Deep North Shore, a 5K fun run, 1.5/2.5-mile walk and balloon launch scheduled for Sunday, April 27, 2014 at 9am at Deerfield High School benefitting LUNGevity Foundation and raising funds for lung cancer research.

“Lung cancer is usually symbolized by a white, pearl or clear ribbon,” explains Sue Bersh, LUNGevity board member and event co-coordinator. “This is because lung cancer is considered the ‘invisible’ disease, receiving very little attention and the least funding for research per death among all major cancers. We are working to change this and are encouraged by the incredible support our event has received to date, with 650 participants already registered and over $144,000 raised.”

“We expect over 1,600 participants this year and hope to surpass our fundraising goal of $185,000,” noted Cindy Schwartz, event co-coordinator. “With 18 northern suburbs declaring April 27th as Breathe Deep North Shore Day, including Deerfield, we are anticipating a very meaningful morning uniting our community in the fight against lung cancer.”
