Deerfield Roll Is a Sushi Delight

Wild Fish's unusual combination of sea food, vegetables and grains is good for a meal or to share.

Patch likes to poll its readers and others to learn opinion around town and that is how we arrived at Wild Fish’s Deerfield Roll as this week’s North Shore Foodie Find.

The handmade Sushi roll is created with spicy mini lobster, black rice, white rice, super white tuna, cucumber and avocado before it is wrapped in a soybean sheet and topped with wasabi mayo.

All the ingredients are there but each roll looks a little different displaying the elaborate work required to create Sushi.

“It depends on the chef,” owner James Oh said of the final product. “We have (edible) soy bean paper on the outside. One side is black rice and one side is white rice,” he added accounting for the slightly different look but identical taste.

The chef’s intricate skill is exceeded by the blended taste of the ingredients with enough spice to warm your mouth but nothing the rice will not temper. The $16 dish is enough for a meal and well suited to share coming with six individual rolls. The restaurant is in its sixth year in Deerfield.

Before we settled on this tasty combination with a little spice and a lot of good taste, we decided to take a poll. So before Monday’s meeting of the Village Board, I approached Mayor Harriet Rosenthal and some of the trustees with the question about what I should highlight.

“Bobby’s smoked salmon pastrami on the potato pancakes,” Trustee Mary Oppenheim said. “I have it every time I’m there.”

Trustee Barbara Struthers suggested a delicacy from the Italian Kitchen. “Mary Sciaretta’s tortelallaci,” she said.

“What about Kevin’s French Toast?” Trustee William Seiden said. “It’s unique.”

The next day Rosenthal mentioned the Deerfield Roll at Wild Fish. I had tried the others and they are all excellent so the Deerfield Roll became the choice.
