Fresh Thyme Presents Vision to Village

Deerfield's proposed new grocery will concentrate on fresh produce. New employer expects to hire 75 to 90 people.

Fresh produce will be the mainstay of Fresh Thyme Farmers Market when it comes to the Cadwell Corners Shopping Center in Deerfield.

That was the message representatives of the new grocery chain gave Thursday at a meeting of the Deerfield Plan Commission talking about the business they would bring to the community and the new jobs they will create.

“Fresh Thyme Farmers Market will offer ‘healthy food at healthy values,’ making fresh and natural food more attainable for the masses,” the company said in its presentation materials. “An extensive ‘farmers market’ fresh produce department is the nucleus of the store.”

Initially proposing to be open from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. every day, the 32,309 square foot store will also offer fresh baked goods, deli food, natural meats and seafood, according to the company’s presentation.

Many of the fruits and vegetables will be organic and locally grown, according to a memo prepared by the Village. There will be a covered outdoor sales area spanning the length of the building.

The Commissioners postponed a vote until their August 22 meeting to give Fresh Thyme an opportunity to gather some additional information, according to Associate Planner Kathy LeVeque.

According to LeVeque, the Commissioners want to know more about the landscape design, the width of the drive aisle, when it expects employees to arrive for work in the morning and other details.

The Phoenix based company was founded in 2012 and plans to open 50 stores in the Midwest over the next six years.
