Portillo’s Emerges as Readers' Choice for Office Depot Space

In latest Patch poll, readers got to pick other and that turned out to be Portillo’s.

Have you ever seen a poll where you were cheering for “other” to win?

For those with that wish it was granted by the survey Patch conducted to gauge reader interest in a tenant for the former Office Depot space near the intersection of Waukegan and Lake Cook Roads.

Earlier: Poll: What Should Replace Office Depot

Of the 14 people who responded to the poll, six chose “other” with five hoping for a food store, two for a computer center and one for a food operation.

Six readers were able to personify “other” and it has a name: Portillo’s. Though he has concerns about the location, Forest Barbieri is one of them. He thinks the business must be a destination location and thinks Portillo’s fits the bill.

“I agree something family oriented would be the best bet and Portillo's is one of the few restaurants that would have a chance there, as people should go out of their way to go there,” Barbieri writes.

Not everyone was so positive about the location. One reader, Dave Greenberg, feels the parcel of land as it is configured is not friendly for a lot of motorists. He would rather see it planted over.

“It doesn't matter what they put there unless you're heading northbound,” Greenberg writes. “Getting in to the lot is extremely difficult. Getting out after you're done shopping is just as bad (even if you're heading northbound).”

There were plenty of other suggestions by readers and almost an equal number of arguments against the ideas.

There was agreement about a return of Woodfire Chicken. Two wanted to see a reprise and no one objected. “I miss that place,” Frank Lopez writes.

Why waste your time with this article ? All week i am going to be hearing morons talking about the "new portillos", that is for "sure" opening.

Agreed....as word is already out that s Portillos will soon be built next to the new CVS on #41 and Park Avenue in HIghland Park.

Yes you need to change the title to "Reader's Choice....." I almost jumped out of my chair with excitement when I saw the article title.

Even though Portillos now serves a lousy hot dog now (they decided to brand there own, and drop the good ones from Vienna to save monoey) they have lots of other good thing on the menu...but that locatiion would be a nightmare for parking, and it's not there style of building...Rt 41 and Park would be a super location...and if they go there, hope Micheals owns the land and build there on, as Portillos would crush them in a year.

I heard that Starbucks is going in next to CVS. Maybe they should put one where Office Depot was, too. Because if it's one thing we need, it's more Starbucks.

So let me get this straight. There's a Portillo's going up in HP on 41. Walmart is talking openly about Skokie Blvd in Northbrook. Word is that a Mariano's will be going up on Waukegan @Half Day Rd or Dundee and Shermer. So much new business. So little Deerfield.

The Portillo's, either in DF or HP, is a pipe dream. I spoke to their corporate development office and they have no plans to open more Portillo's at this time. They are focusing on their other concepts. Not to say this wont change in the future, but that is the present. Furthermore, of all those you mention, the only one that is "real" at this time is Walmart. Meanwhile the citizens are doing all they can to keep it out.

I agree with RonnieTheLimoDriver. Hey Ron, when is the block party coming to the North Shore:)

Portillo's was merely a thought. Walmart ALWAYS gets grief when they begin the process of a new store. Something about inefficient, overpriced priced businesses that might suffer from competition. Usually, Walmart wins and then everyone that complained shops there. Starbucks is going in next to CVS. They were trying for 2012 but apparently the developer ran into some issues.

Talk to Jack Mayhoffer about that.
Silvio Dante January 16, 2013 at 04:13 AM
I was thinking of talking to Rusty or Bobo about that.

It's adorable when someone calling themselves 'Dr' shows their ignorance so blatantly. Call any Portillo's... their hot dogs are from Vienna.
