Spinello Wins 2 Medals at State Gym Meet

Brian Spinello won two gymnastics medals at the State Meet Saturday at Lincoln-Way East High School in Frankfurt to turn in the best Deerfield High Schoolperformance out of nine athletes who were part of state tournaments in gymnastics and badminton over the weekend.

Spinello took fifth place on floor exercise with a 9.55 score and 10th on the parallel bars with an 8.95. He began the final round in ninth place on floor with a 9.3 and improved in the finals. On the parallel bars, he had a 9.1 in the preliminaries and was in 10th as well. A junior, Spinello qualified for State in two events last year but did not make the finals.

Four other Warriors—Jeff Spinello, Jack Schneider, Alex Cimaglia and Robert Suszek—made the trip to State competing in Saturday’s preliminary round. Jeff Spinello, Brian’s twin, also competed in three events. He was 15th in the vault, 41st on floor and 49th on the horizontal bars.

Cimaglia finished 16th in the preliminaries on the parallel bars while Schneider was 35th on floor. Suszek ended the preliminary round in 38th on the parallel bars.

Warriors Place 15th in State Badminton Tourney
Cara Silverman along with the doubles team of Katie Frankel and Ally Kolpas won three matches each to lead the Deerfield badminton team to a 15th place finish with five points at the State Tournament Friday and Saturday at Eastern Illinois University in Charleston.Silverman, who was not seeded, won her first two matches including a 21-17, 19-21, 21-15 victory over 5-8 seed Kyleen Jan of Naperville North. Silverman fell in the third round, picked up a consolation win and bowed after the fifth consolation bracket.Frankel and Kolpas also won their first two matches before a third-round exit from the championship bracket. They picked up half a point more for the Warriors with a victory in the fourth consolation round before losing in the fifth.Deerfield’s other entry, Marissa Levy, did not have luck of the draw with a first round pairing against eventual state champion Stephanie Lin of Lyons, falling 21-10, 21-15.
