Fall Features at Deerfield Park District for Children and Teens

Deerfield Park District Recreation Supervisors Ginny Wiemerslage (Preschool and Early Childhood) and Adam Wohl (Youth and Teens) encourage parents to check out the selected, fun, fall activities featured below. The following classes vary by type and by age (from preschool through those up to age 14).

Children ages 5-12 may join Magician Gary Kantor’s Magic Class for 55 fun and fascinating minutes learning card, rope, coin, mind-reading, and other tricks. Amaze family and friends! Children are grouped by age and are taught age-appropriate tricks, on Thursday, October 10, 5-5:55 p.m., at Jewett Park Community Center (JPCC), in Deerfield. All materials are provided. Each child takes home a magic trick. New tricks at each session!

Children ages 7-12 with an interest in learning to play the guitar can receive high quality instruction in a friendly format that stresses having fun and learning, on Tuesdays, November 5 through December 17. In Beginning Guitar 1, from 4:45-5:45 p.m., students learn basic chords, sight-reading and songs. In Beginning Guitar 2, from 5:45-6:45 p.m., students continue to build on skills learned previously and learn more advanced chords, sight-reading and songs. Classes are at Jewett Park Community Center (JPCC), in Deerfield. No classes are held on October 15. Students must bring their own guitar.

For boys and girls between the ages of 11 and 14, a Babysitting Clinic is offered on two Saturdays, November 16 and 23, from 1-4:00 p.m. at Jewett Park Community Center (JPCC), in Deerfield. Instructor Colleen Mazzetta teaches students to prepare for the responsibilities of babysitting and child care. Class covers first aid, safety in the home, handling an emergency, the needs of the children, recreation and craft ideas, and infant care. Students who attend all sessions and successfully complete the course will receive a Safe Sitter Certificate.

For girls 4-8 years of age and their moms (or other significant adult): don’t miss this fall’s Mother-Daughter Cookie Night, on Friday, November 15, from 6:30-8:00 p.m. at the Café at Sachs Recreation Center, 455 Lake Cook Road, in Deerfield. Kelly, from the Café, is also a pastry chef. She will lead participants in decorating cookies and bake specialty items. There will be some time for “baking” games; and refreshments will be served.
