Chicken Keeping for City Folks @ Deerfield Public Library

Did you know that Deerfield residents are now allowed to keep chickens in their backyards? In February 2014 Village Board of Trustees voted to allow that Deerfield residents can keep up to four egg-laying hens in a backyard coop 10 feet from property lines. No roosters are allowed.

The Deerfield Public Library will host a program on Saturday, July 26, 1:00 p.m., designed for curious folks who are considering chicken ownership, as well as those who already have their own birds and want to learn more. The program will cover the basics of legality, breed selection, purchase and care of chicks, coops, caring for adult birds, disease and pest issues, as well as chicken health, and keeping your neighbors happy.

The program will be led by urban chicken consultant, Jennifer Murtoff of Home to Roost LLC. The program is free of charge, but registration is required. You can register on the Library's website or call 847-945-3311. The Library is located at 920 Waukegan Road, Deerfield.
