Former DHS Volleyball Player In Kazan, Russia rowing for USA

Jim Letten, a 2011 graduate of Deerfield High School and currently a junior at the University of Wisconsin, Madison has spent the last week in Kazan, Russia as part of the United States delegation competing in the World University Games.

Jim is a member of the Men’s Eight Rowing team which recently completed its competition against teams from Russia, the Ukraine, Poland, Belarus, Netherlands, and Norway. The United States advanced to the grand final in the men’s eight on July 8th, and placed sixth overall. The USA team includes rowers from Marist, UCLA, Boston College, George Washington University, and UC Santa Barbara. Letten’s ascension to the team resulted from success during a series of trials at a US Rowing camp in Boston Massachusetts during June. In preparation for their match in Russia, the lineup raced at the US Rowing National Championships in West Windsor, New Jersey against a field that included the current US Olympic Men’s Eight and a team from Australia.

The World University Games were started in 1923 and is the second largest sports participation event in the world. Just like the Olympics, the Games are divided into summer and winter sports and are held every two years. This summer, 13,500 athletes from 166 countries assembled in Kazan, Russia which is located along the banks of the Volga River. Kazan spent 4.5 billion dollars to build or update 64 sporting venues as well as the” Universiade Village,” where athletes sleep, eat and relax while not competing. According to Jim, “I still think the whole thing is surreal… it hasn’t really sunk in yet. It’s such an honor to be here, to be wearing all of this USA gear
