DHS Rummage Sale a Huge Success

Students raise more than $15,000 for charity.

Shoppers flocked to Deerfield High School this weekend for a massive rummage sale that raised money for the homeless. The school’s cafeteria was packed with items for sale that ranged from clothes to video games to couches.

The rummage sale raised around  $15,500, which is about 20 percent more than last year’s numbers.

“The sale was really something to behold,” Jeff Hoyer, Deerfield High School teacher, said. “The students performed admirably.”

100 students and 25 parents participated in this year's sale.

“As a greeter, I got to see people’s faces light up with joy and relief when they heard about the added discounts," one DHS student said about his experience working at the rummage sale. "Many of the people who came were really in need of these great deals and to see their excitement made the experience incredibly rewarding.”

DHS will be using the money to build a house for a homeless family, which will include all the furnishings. Once approved by the school board, the plan is for students and chaperones to construct the home during spring break.

The left over items from the sale were donated to five different charities in the area that help the homeless and disadvantaged in Northern Illinois.
