Snapdragons, or sometimes called dragon flowers, have a lobe that resembles the face of a dragon that opens and closes its mouth when a bee lands on its curved lip.

They are a popular summertime genus Antirrhinum magus - its scientific name -  and found throughout the United States, Europe and North Africa. They like full sun and warm temperatures, and  blooms last until late summer. Their tall, strong stems reach anywhere from 40 to 60 inches so they make excellent cut flowers for vases.

Mrs. Youngberg also won three Best of Class ribbons for other entries submitted from her garden. She is a 35 year resident of Deerfield, and has gardened here for more than 20 years.

“I find gardening to be a wonderful past time. It’s relaxing and enjoyable being out in the fresh air. I find it to be a great hobby that provides me with many personal rewards,” she said.

Flower Show chairperson Dorothy Collins said this year’s show was another popular success with about 80 flower and veggie entries on display in the Jewell Park Community Center throughout the July 4th Deerfield Family Day celebration.

“We had a nice crowd stop by and view the attractive displays throughout the day. Our knowledgeable and independent judges faced many difficult decisions in deciding on the winning entries,” she said.

This was Collins’s sixth year serving as Flower Show chairman. Her summertime pride and joy is tending a raised mixed flower and vegetable garden in her yard on Indian Hill Road.
