Police Again Target Cell Phone Users

Deerfield Police joins other area departments to curb hand held cell phone use during last week of school.

Deerfield Police will increase enforcement and education of the Village’s ordinance banning the use of hand held cellular phones while driving June 3 through 7, according to a news release from the Deerfield Police Department.

Coinciding with the last week of school, this is the second of three one-week programs in Deerfield, Highland Park, Lake Forest, Winnetka, Waukegan, Evanston and Chicago. The idea of the effort is to combat the public safety hazard of hand held cellular use, according to the release.

During the first weeklong dragnet, the communities outside Chicago issued 293 tickets for hand held cell phone use while driving as well as 219 warnings, according to the release.

Deerfield has also been targeting the use of hand held cell phones in the Lake Cook Road construction zone. During the first month of the roadwork, the number of tickets issued for talking on a hand held cell phone while driving doubled.
