OIL LAMP THEATER PRESENTS "THREE VIEWINGS" by Jeffrey Hatcher

Oil Lamp Theater in Glenview presents Three Viewings, a dark comedic trilogy of interrelated monologues about set in a mid-western funeral parlor. This production will run until February 10th.

These witty and poignant tales penned by Jeffrey Hatcher explore in surprising and sensitive ways how the fragile threads of love, money and compassion can shape human relationships. This unusual night of theater will draw audiences along with three characters as they each share their revelations about how the bonds of love can transcend loss.

The first story, “Tell Tale,” introduces Emil (Joe Page), a shy and love-sick funeral director who struggles to control his desperate passion for a local businesswoman. The object of Emil’s affection has discovered the lucrative advantages of handing out business cards for her real estate business during services at Emil’s mortuary. She is, however, unaware of his unrequited adoration. Emil struggles to give voice to his unspoken passion, but his private reveries receive an unexpected jolt that shakes his buttoned-down world to the core.

In “The Thief of Tears” we meet Mac (Jasmine Ryan), a beautiful,tough-talking hustler who makes her living by stealing jewelry from corpses. The death of her wealthy grandmother provides Mac with an opportunity to settle scores – but as she approaches the large diamond ring on her grandmother’s finger, she discovers that she’s in for a lot more than she bargained for.

“Thirteen Things About Ed Carpolotti,” offers the story of Virginia (June Miller), a grieving widow, who discovers that she must not only re-order her own life, but also cope with the messy business dealings of Ed, her late husband. Ed, we learn, was “a real wheeler-dealer,” who had amassed a staggering debt and left his wife to ponder “the sin of failure – the secular sin that knows no religion.” After a stunning surprise, Virginia provides a final, haunting image of tenderness and reveals both the power and magic of love.
