Post Commander John Coughenour, a Viet Nam veteran, will preside at the ceremonies and will salute those who have served their country during war and peace.

He will be joined by Deerfield Mayor Harriet Rosenthal and World War II veteran Al Zelent, a survivor of the sinking of the Navy Carrier USS Princeton during World War II in the South Pacific.

Other speakers include Women’s Auxiliary Unit 738 President Joann Harrison, and Sons of the American Legion, Squadron Commander Frank Haney. Auxiliary Chaplain Harriet Sutton will provide the prayer honoring those who have passed on to Post Everlasting.

Following the ceremonies the Legionnaires will visit and join a singalong with aging veterans who reside at Deerfield’s Gidwitz Place for Assisted Living.

The American Legion is the largest veterans organization in the nation with nearly 3 million members.
