DHS Students Act to Help Planet

Earthworks group at Deerfield High School subtly lets people know what they can do.

Anyone dropping people off or picking them up at Deerfield High School for the last eight years has been given a subtle message about protecting the environment from Earthworks, a student group at the institution.

There are signs cautioning people about the negative effects of idling a car. “Clean Air Counts,” reads the marker. “Make a visible difference. Save fuel and air—please don’t idle.”

“Earthworks is a group of students who are passionate about saving the environment through stewardship,” Township High School District 113 Communications Director Natalie Kaplan said.

“Since cars line up outside of Deerfield High School to pick up and drop off students, Earthworks thought the no idling sign would be a great initiative to try and cut down on carbon monoxide and pollution.”

The group believes in action and personal involvement. The club collects recyclables throughout the school and has adopted the Glencoe Beach, cleaning it up twice a year. They also pick up trash twice a year on Half Day Road.

“Members enjoy creating awareness of the 4Rs: Recycling, Reusing, Reducing and Recovering,” Kaplan said.
