Deerfield Park Plaza Filling Up

Shopping center near Lake Cook and Waukegan Roads adds two new tenants.

With downtown Deerfield’s retail space quickly filling up the rest of the Village is getting active too.

Deerfield Park Plaza just west of Waukegan Road on Lake Cook Road just hit the 90 percent occupancy rate with its latest two tenants, Hadassah Resale Shop and Cosmo Prof.

Sherwin Blitzstein, one of the owners Deerfield Park Plaza, sees it as a different kind of shopping center from its neighbors, Cadwell Corners and Deerbrook Mall. He attributes his success to the commercial mix.

“We’re a service type shopping center,” Blitzstein said. “We’re not really soft goods. We get a lot of traffic from DMV and our successful restaurants. This is as good as it’s been since 2008,” he added to the ability to lease space.

Hadassah Resale Shop is a high end retail operation selling donated goods from around the North Shore operated by Hadassah, the Women’s Zionist Organization of America. Cosmo Prof offers most of the supplies a cosmetologist needs to set up shop, according to Sherwin Blitzstein, one of the center’s owners.

“They sell everything (a beautician) needs to set up their station,” Blitzstein said. That would include utensils like scissors, shampoos and even the chairs. “They might have to order the chair.”

Cosmo Prof sells directly to salons but not to the public. When the Village Board of Trustees approved the recommendation of the Plan Commission to OK special use permits for the two businesses, it made it clear they wanted them to make an effort to sell to local salons. “That’s their business,” Blitzstein said.
