How would you like to have $1,000 to spend at a bookstore?

Brianne Petrey of Deerfield got that opportunity when she was given a $1,000 gift card from Barnes & Noble Saturday as one of five regional winners in the company’s Discovery Friday Local Sweepstakes in the Deerfield store.

In Petrey’s case, a lot of the money will be spent buying books for graduate study in speech pathology. A 2008 graduate from Deerfield High School who earned her undergraduate degree from Marquette University in the spring, she plans to attend graduate school in the fall.

Not only did Petrey earn a gift card, but Barnes & Noble will also donate $1,000 worth of books to an organization of her choice. She chose Tutoring Chicago. Right now she uses her education doing in home tutoring of children with autism.

Petrey was the lone winner in 10 midwestern states. Learn more about her and how she won on the exclusive Patch video.

Speech therapy is important. Some individuals have trouble pronouncing the letter "s", as in, "she plan to attend graduate school" instead of "she plans to attend graduate school."
