District 109 Poised to Reduce Taxes

Deerfield residents will pay less for elementary and middle schools in 2014.

A steady reduction of debt has enabled Deerfield Public Schools District 109 to ask a little bit less from the Village’s taxpayers next year, according to Assistant Superintendent Greg Himebaugh.

“Our revenue is going to be $49.4 million but we expect to receive closer to $49.1 million,” Himebaugh said. “This is going to result in a small decrease in District 109’s share of property tax.”

In simpler terms, a person with a house valued at $500,000 will pay approximately $50 less in real estate taxes next year than were due in 2013, according to Himebaugh. He credits the reduction of the District’s debt as the reason.

“We’ve worked really hard at the reduction of debt,” Himebaugh said. “We expect to see this (trend) continue for the next four to five years,” he added hinting the reduction will not be a one-time event.

Himebaugh forecasts operating expenditures for next year at $49.9 million with enough revenue from all sources to cover it.
