Books and Hockey Make Goldberg Leader
Member of hockey and library boards talks to Patch in the latest of its People in the News series.
A lifelong love of books and ice hockey has spurred Deerfield’s into becoming a community leader hoping his time away from his family sets an example for his children.
Goldberg, a lawyer by profession, sits on the board of the Deerfield Public Library and is a member of the Deerfield High School Hockey Board. Like most schools in the area, hockey is a club sport at Deerfield with no assistance from the athletic department making parent involvement critical.

One of the reasons he got involved was his son, Danny Goldberg, a hockey player who joined the Warriors this year as a freshman. Michael Goldberg was a long time hockey player who was recruited for the job in Deerfield by the head of the Metro North League.
“I played with his son at Glenbrook North,” Michael Goldberg, a Northbrook native, said of the league official. “We have a pretty good relationship. I’ve coached my son and it was a comfortable fit.”

During his Northbrook youth, Michael Goldberg spent a lot of time in the town’s library as well. “I could get any book I wanted,” he said.
When Goldberg and his wife, Kelly Goldberg, wanted to find a place to raise their family, Deerfield fit right in.
“It’s the right size community with the right mix of people,” Goldberg said. “It’s small enough to feel intimate.”
Four years ago, there was an opening for on the library board in Deerfield and Goldberg sought the position. He likes his involvement because he sees the library as an important community asset. “It’s important to have a special place where people can meet,” he said.
Goldberg’s time with the high school hockey board, the library and the Metro North League takes him away from his family but he hopes there is a bigger lesson for his children.
“It’s important to give a message by example,” Goldberg said. “You have to give back. I get a lot out of it because I enjoy being involved.”
Michael and Kelly Goldberg led by example last month when they as part of a group of 66 congregants from Deerfield’s to help people suffering from the ongoing difficulties from Hurricane Katrina.
